why would you got to the British Embassy for a visa to Cambodia or Laos? You need to go to the Cambodian or Lao Embassy my friend. Should take you a day to get, do a search for the nearest embassy and information for the visa

No. You need to go to the Cambodian consulate for a Cambodian visa and a Laotian consulate to get a visa for Laos. As a UK citizen you can get a Laotian visa at any official border crossing for approx $45USD or $20USD from the Laotian consulate ahead of time. You can get a Cambodian visa at many official border crossings with Vietnam, but not all. Cost is approx $20USD. If you are flying into these countries you will be able to get the visa at the airport you arrive at. If you are taking the overland route make sure to have 2 passport size photos for each visa. If you choose to get the visa's ahead of time at the consulates expect a 2-3 day processing time for each.

Why bother with going to a consulate?
Cambodian visa on arrival is available at all borders for US$20 and takes about 15 minutes to be issued. Lao visa on arrival is available at the Lao Bao border crossing near Hue in Vietnam.
The only reason you'd need to pre-arrange a visa is if you want to go from Cambodia into Laos (Lao VOA is NOT available at this crossing. Cambodian VOA IS if you're going the other way though.) And if this is the case, it's easier to get the Lao visa issued in Phnom Penn.

I would find a good tour office and they could do this for you. The British Embassy can not issue visa's for other countries. If you have the time go the Lao and Cambodian Embassies and ask them what you need to do.
