Do I need shots before going to Vietnam? What other "must know" advise do you have? :)?

I am going to Vietnam at the end of this month and will be there for 2 weeks. Do you have any advice from tourist spots to travel tips to cultural "must knows"? Anything you can offer would be much appreciated!

Yes you need shots. Why would anyone want to go to Vietnam?

henryhuyhoang
You do not need any shots. Just bring some Tylenol for headache, cause you will inhale lots of smokes from motobikes in Vietnam..The capital city of the world of motobike!!!!!...Also bring some mosquito spray or lotion, you can get it at anny sports store..
Just drink bottle water, not fountain and watch what you eat..
Fruits are fresh in Vietnam..so no harms there..plenty of exotic fruits in Vietnam..so have fun!!
For cultural places, depend where you are going..
North..Ha Long Bay is the place to go..very beautifull..makes sure you battery is full charge for your camera and video..
South..Cu Chi tunnel is the hottest spot..other than that go to Ben Thanh Market at night..
Have fun in Vietnam..and Happy New Year when you get there..it will be on Feb. 7...

I went to Ho Chi Minh City and Nha Trang (coastal resort). We stayed in a five star hotel in Nha Trang so weren't expecting to be bothered too much by insects in our room. Despite having coils and nets, we were relentlessly bitten my mosquitoes about 50 in the room at any one time. (They obviously came in while the maid was cleaning cos we tried to keep the place shut.) Take some good repellent and plenty of it. The beach was rather disappointing with alot of washed up rubbish to be honest. If I had my time again I would have spent longer in the main city looking at cultural attractions as opposed to a beach resort.

You should have regular shots or booster if needed (hepatitis a,b , tetanus). I am not too sure about malaria shot though because side effect is a pain in the b-tt. You are better off having repellents.. Have plenty of Tylenol, Imodium AD, Pepto Bismo, cough drops. If not needed you can give them away right before heading back. Skip War Museum, Cu Chi tunnels, shopping mall. Buy souvenirs from local markets.
PS. don't drink tap water, nor kiss locals.

dun think u need shots but if u're afraid, then go for it. malaria shots i u want.
went there twice last yr, my fens and i did not take any shots.

as for tourists spots, u'll need to dress appropriately when u visit places of worship, and any places that are important like Ho Chin Min maulsoleum etc, meaning tat u've got to wear a shirt with sleeves and legs are to be covered to mid-calves. both ladies & men.

as for cultures, hmmm.... guess when u've bargain for an item, don't walk away not purchasing. the courtesy rule shld be to purchase the item. else the shop-owner will be very angry with u. oh.. another thing is, u've got to learn how to hold the chopsticks. =D
yeah.. coz the vietnamese use chopsticks for eating...but western cutlery are also present in most restaurants... but not road-side stalls.

As for vietnamese kids, don't touch the kids head area, coz this is not a good omen in the vietnamese culture.

Do bring ur toilet paper tissue paper... hahaha... coz some toilets do not provide toilet paper. =D

right! enjoy ur trip! =D

Blitzing in and out reduces the numbers of shots recommended. The hepatitis series is probably a good, albeit expensive investment. There is no malaria shot - you can get pills, but it is unlikely you will be in an area where malaria is a problem.

CDC website can give you info on recommended shots.

Be somewhat cautious on fresh (uncooked) vegetables & salads. I have been living in VN for the last 4 years, eating pretty much anything without concern, but you are coming in for 2 weeks - it would be pretty disappointing to be laid up by a bad tummy! And, there was cholera present just a few weeks ago - so while it appears to be controlled, there is a risk of that too.

Vietnam, while I have never been there before, my father in law is from there.

I don't have any tourist destinations, but from what I hear it's wonderful and laid back and simple.

I can give you some cultural "must knows". Take your shoes off when entering someones house, dress modestly, and do not be loud and rambunctious. You will have a much nicer experience! When taking motor bike rides, don't hold onto the driver, they consider it very rude. There are handlebars on the bike you can hold onto.

Just overall be respectful.

And as for the food, it's not that bad, it's actually very flavorful and you won't get sick. Trust me, just don't drink the water.

visit your health department in your area and tell them you are going to VN. They will give you a shot or tell you what's kind of vacin you need to have before you go.
Do not drink tap water in VN. Remember electric in VN is 220V, make sure to have AC converter from 220V to 110V for your electronic devices. Bring extra rechargeable battery with you (AA or AAA) if you use camera.
Have a nice trip. Vietnam is beautiful place to visit.

Go to www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk or ask your doctor for the masta no they will know what you mean and if you want culture don't miss the cu chi tunnels I travelled from Ho Chi Minh to Hanoi with stops on the way on night trains. Try to get to Ha Long Bay its stunning. A visit to Sappa near the chinese border is also worth the trip.
