Do You Think Vietnam Would Be Better...?

Do you think Vietnam would be better off today if South Vietnam had united the nation instead of North Vietnam?

?
South Vietnam existed only with massive American aid and at one time, over 500,000 American troops. Even with all of that, the South Vietnamese regime couldn't even control all of its territory (during the height of the American involvement) and easily fell once their American masters withdrew their combat troops. So, to talk about South Vietnam being able to hold on on its own, much less unifying the whole country and being to run it, is pure fairy tale.

Vietnam today is not North Korea. It's actually closer to South Korea. Yes, South Korea!

It has good and friendly relations with the US and with practically all other nations of the world. It has the highest economic growth in the world, second only to China. It was admitted to the World Trade Organization last year and succesfully hosted the APEC summit attended by President Bush and heads of states/governments of China, Japan , Russia, South Korea, Australia, among others. It has even been nominated for membership in the Security Council of the United Nations.

When President Bush visited the Saigon Stock Exchange in November of last year, he remarked:"If I were a young man, I'd move here to Vietnam". Do you think he'd say that under the old South Vietnam? Of course, not. We know that because he chose to serve in the Texas Air Guard so he wouldn't be sent to South Vietnam back then!

The old South Vietnam, that pitiful and incompetent regime created by us (the US) is dead. Let it rest in peace. We do not need another clumsy lackey like that. It's much more profitable for us to do business with the New Vietnam, a robust, prospering, proud, independent and peaceful nation that's also friendly to us.

i would have to say no president diem's goverment was currupt. Diem had his poltical enemy's imprisoned or killed. i think that if Diem won the country would be far worse off and the newly free country would not have servived under his leadership.

no, considering the south gov attitude, in case of a victory vietnam would be another philippines, or worst, sri lanka.. civil war, corrupt governants and so on.

i think they are looking better now, good education, and lots of young people.. very good potential.

south Vietnamese had no ambition to do anything so i doubt it would have been better

Look at Japan. Look at South Korea. Both Asian countries have prospered after the guidance of the United States. North and South Korea illustrate a perfect example of what would have happened if South Vietnam had won the war. South Korea is becoming a technological power in the world today, however North Korea is stuck as a third world country. Communism has how many countries now? 4...
