Vietnam is so popular. At this moment Vietnam is the Indochinese Pearl, is popular for the tourism and it beautiful.

Before the nineties Vietnam was popular for the War Movies, but now is different. Vietnam has a fast economic growth rate and has many things like the advanced countries. So Vietnam is popular today.

Note: Sorry for my bad English, I'm from Mexico (but I was born in Costa Rica) and I'm in 9th grade. I will live in Vietnam when I finish the university and I will work in the country for helped the environment.

Well i am English and live in Nha Trang. This place is certainly popular with tourists, and Vietnam has one of the fastest growing economies in the world. In fact its a great place to live if you have a little money, but if you are poor it can be very hard.

Freakonomics
Vietnam's economy is definitely rising, and the world can see this as a promising place to invest. Hopefully, the communist govt dont mess this opportunity up.

You questioned if Vietnam was a really popular country back then, I don't think so, not popular at all would be correct since the everyone hated the war. Now, Vietnam is attracting a lot of tourism, which is very good.

Most of my family still lives there, I love the country and the people, just not the politics and corruption.

Vietnam is popular for people who knows Vietnam as a country more than their history. But these are some interesting facts that many foreigners do not know about VN.

a) The microcomputer was invented by a Vietnamese ( Andre Truong)

b) First Asian that won first place in Chopin Piano Award ( Dang Son)

c) VN has won The Noble Prize, Canne Film Prizes, International Cosmos award, and Clay Math Research Award.

d) Second Fastest growing econony in the world for many years only behind China.

e) Fifth largest ship building industry in the world.

f) Has the oldest unrecorded college system in the world ( Temp. of Lit. )

g) Has the longest underground river in the world. ( northern VN)

h) Longest cable car in the world. ( Nha Trang )

i) 85% of Vietnamese own fixed or mobile phone in 2008.

I'm Vietnamese, living in Hanoi. Glad to know you ^^

Vietnam is not popular as some of the other countries in Asia: China, Thailand, Singapore ... but truely, more and more people have been here and after being here, I believe all of them have good impressions about Vietnam as a beautiful country with fast growing economy. I travel a lot and it's true that first time someone look at me will think whether I'm from China or Korea for example, but after he/she knew that I'm from Vietnam or Hanoi, he/she said smt like "hey, it's a good country, people are friendly" or "oh, I've been to Hanoi, it's a big city".

It's also true that Vietnam is still a developing country and the living standard can't compare to the US for example. But many people who were born in Vietnam and studied abroad or living for a while in the other countries would finally want to go back to Vietnam or to do business here. I myself also want to live here until the rest of my life and do what I can do to make Vietnam a prosperous country. Besides, I also love to live here because it's really safe and I can have a pleasant life. My income is not high as if I work in the developed countries but in Vietnam, it's really enough for me, I've never had to spend more than the amount I can earn, lol.

well i think it is really up to you to decide that. diff people have different opinions, but you may or not enjoy it. i am vietnamese, and personally, i find vn to be a very fun place to live. whereas here in the US, you always have to worry about getting kidnapped, but when you live in a closed-knit community, everyone looks after one another and i really love that. when i visist, i can go w/ my cousins all over town without my parents worrying because they look out for each other. i really enjoyed living there.
although life can be very hard, vn is still a very BEAUTIFUL country. when i read all of the answers above me saying that vn is communist, that makes me very mad. vn is a growing and developing country that has been thru so much to be where it is today. blame it on ho chi minh, but not all of vn is communist. my family lives in the south, and it is beautiful there. i hope that someday when i am old, i can return there and live the rest of my years in my country Vietnam.

I am a Vietnamese. I'm living in the U.S.
I don't think Vietnam is a popular country. Sadly, that's true.
I don't like communism either. But I DO love my country, a lot, no matter it is unpopular, or poor, or something... Because it is my country. Because of the culture, the history, the people...
If some people cannot think of anything else about a country but war and government, no wonder why they don't like Vietnam.
Do you speak and write Vietnamese? If you can, it's so easy. Just type it like it is because Vietnamese is also an alphabet language. If you want the accent marks, download the software unikey to type it. http://www.unikey.org/bdownload.php
Good luck!

Well I dont think Vietnam is very popular I mean there are a lot of tourist there but vietnam is only famous for the vietnam war and thats about it I'm vietnamese but i was born in the USA and when people look at me they're always like are you chinese or korean and they never know where vietnam is or how to spell it.It's kinda sad and to mention it in schools they don't really teach about vietnam only mainly china and japan

xxAsufrexx
Not really,Most americans are stupid and all they think of is war.
And that is what they think of when they think of Vietnam(the bad things that american soldiers did were too much)

A long time ago they were part of the PRC

Though even Mexico is more popular than Vietnam and
When people think of popular asian places all these fat white Japanophiles think of Tokyo!Ugh I used to think it was cool then it got annoying and I found out that there were better things like
Mexico City,Oslo,Espoo,Amsterdam,
Berlin,Moscow,Munich,Copenhagen,Newyor... and of course LiliHammer!

But really Vietnam is quite unpopular and Japan gets all the attention(no fair)

boohoo_Jebus
Sorry,I don't think Vietnam has ever been 'popular'.People don't want to go to a communist country.
I have a Vietnamese friend. He said life there isn't good for the average person.
