Although I haven’t been to Cao Son myself, I’m pretty sure that you will have an incredible experience with your visit there. Cao Son is in the far North of Vietnam and well inside where the Hmong live. That region of Vietnam has quite unique characteristics in geography and in the people compared to the rest of Vietnam. I believe that region is Vietnam’s best-kept secret.

The geography of that region consists of sharply ascending rigid mountains bordering river valleys with terraced hills full of rice paddies for as far as the eye can see. The terraced hills have been carved over thousands of years and will be an incredible sight to see. What’s going to be the best experience is mingling with the locals.

The Hmong are the indigenous people of this region. They have their own language, culture and lifestyle, which has seemingly been unchanged for many hundreds of years. You will notice Hmong right away by their very colorful dress and difference in language compared to the Kinh (Vietnamese). They are incredibly nice and very polite, which you will notice from first contact. Even the Kinh in that region seem to be more polite and courteous compared to the rest of Vietnam.

With exception of Sapa and Lao Cai, the northernmost parts of Vietnam have yet to be overrun by tourism, which will probably make your stay in Cao Son rather unique by being relatively unspoiled. You have probably found the following Web site: http://caoson-ecolodge.com . This could very well be the only Western style accommodation available in Cao Son. As in most of the Vietnamese countryside, I would be suspect in how the bathrooms function there. In other words - bring toilette paper with you.

Cao Son and that region of the country is higher in elevation that the rest of Vietnam. That area is about the only place in all of Vietnam having regular snowfall. I would advise taking warmer clothing than what you might be accustomed to wearing in the rest of Vietnam.

My wife was born in Ha Giang and raised in Tuyen Quang, which is not far from Cao Son. I had the pleasure of visiting the region when we obtained our marriage license. The visit left me with an unforgettable experience, which I’m sure you will find yourself during your visit to Cao Son.

Have a great trip!
