What is the distance between the two towns, how long does generally it take, and what is the best way to get from Haiphong airport to Hong Gai (Ha Long Bay)?
From Hai Phone to Hon Gay is about 28 miles the way the crow flies, but probably about 50 miles by road and highways.
There's a very nice highway that connects Hai Phong to Hon Gay and point North along the coast. A few practical options for you to get from Hai Phong to Hon Gay are as follows:
- Public bus
- Tour bus
- Taxi
- Private car
The public bus would be a very cheap but absolutely horrid ride as you are crammed into an overcrowded bus for the duration of your trip. A tour bus for a few bucks more would be a much more pleasant and safer experience.
If you don't want to travel in groups or want to stop at places along the way, then you want to take a taxi or private car. Taxis are relatively cheap in Vietnam, but the long stretch between the two cities is going to be more expensive than negotiating for a private car.
There might be hydrofoil boats that run between the two places. There are hydrofoil boats everywhere in Vietnam, which are very practical means of transportation in a country crisscrossed with rivers. My wife and I took a hydrofoil from Cat Ba to Hai Phong a few years ago. You will want to take one if it is available.
You can find the details of all of the mentioned modes of transportation at the tourist information counter when you arrive at Hai Phong.
One thing before I close...
Ha Long Bay was one of the most beautiful places I have ever been in my life. Take a good camera with you, because you will use it a lot.
