Vietnam is so westernized and commercialized now that it is difficult to answer your question, especially I notice that you (Ong Jon) seem very knowledgeable and familiar with Vietnam.
I have to think about your question for a few minutes before coming up with two suggestions:
1. visit a tribe in the moutain part of Vietnam, where there are many ethnic minority Vietnamese people. These folks do live and experience a different life than most other Vietnamese. It will be quite an experience to live among them and witness their culture.
2. visit an out-of-nowhere farm place in north/middle part of Vietnam, where you should stay for a few nights and mingle with the local folks. In these places, there might not be regular electricity, no "good" toilet, no entertainment, ... But you will see how these people interact (farmer markets), socialize (door to door), and entertain (singing, movie, gathering.) In some cases, it seems like a different world altogether.
I'll be interested in seeing other answers as well :-). |

take a train up to sa pa from hanoi. rent motor bikes up there and cruise the highlands. we met a lot of the indigenous people there and had a blast.
I would also suggest spending a night on a boat in hoalong bay.
Vietnam is such a beautiful country - you will have a one of a kind experience wherever you go. |

Go to Bach Ma National Park. It is between DaNang and Hue. The train stops near by and you can rent a truck to the top of the mountain. Hiking there you might even see a Tiger. Very beautiful water falls and lots of trails to hike. Best of all it isn't all that crowded. Have fun, Cheers. |
