You can however get cheaper stuff buy buying things in the towns and villages where they are made. You should also be ready to bargain fiercely, especially in the cheaper stalls such as Ben Thanh market. You can often reduce prices by 50% or more.
Good luck but please be careful with your purse, there are a lot of snatch thieves on motorbikes. Also avoid to carry anything else too expensive they can grab when on the street and do not wear expensive watches or jewellery. My friend was dragged 20 metres along the road on her knees by such a thief and her knees were a dreadful mess.
Don't be scared though, just careful and have fun.
