Like most former Saigonese or South Vietnamese, we prefer Saigon. To the world, the official name is Ho Chi Minh but no matter what name you prefer, it's still a place where lots Vietnamese people can relate to. I believe even people who live in Ho Chi Minh city still call it Saigon.

As much as I don't agree with Ho Chi Minh's philosophy, I have to say I admire the man. He was one of the leaders who lived by example and that was why the North won the war. That was one of the best qualities of being Vietnamese.- discipline, hard working and determination to stand up for ourselves. How many wars we have won despite the fact that we're not much bigger than New Jersey?

They are one & the same. Saigon is the old name, HCM - Ho Chih Min City is the name given after the revolution. One & the same, South Vietnam.

I prefer Saigon because it is not only shorter and easier to pronounce but also evokes a tinte of nostalgia.
I am a Hanoian.

After the fall of South Vietnam, Saigon officially became Ho Chi Minh City, but all the refugees in America call it Saigon, and hte majority of the people in HCM/Saigon call it Saigon, unless they're scared of communist, they call it HCM, i personall call it saigon, sounds exotic and sexxy

as i'm a Saigonese, i can say that the proper name nowaday is Ho Chi Minh City, but there're people prefer to call Saigon. and i also prefer Saigon. my dad has said that he thought Saigon was better to name a city, cause HCM city sounds like this city is owned by Ho Chi Minh. yeah? hope you've heard President Ho Chi Minh...
however, i suppose you should say Ho Chi Minh City or else people would not be really sure

They're the same, it depends on each person likes what name to call. Personally i often say Saigon when people ask me where i'm from, but i like Ho Chi Minh City too as it reminds of a City named after Uncle Ho, a great leader, so it's a beautiful name. Both are just fine to me.

SkyKing
both are the same.....one is b4 the end of the Vietnam war....the other after the Vietnam war
