What is the best method of travel from Ha Noi to Ha Long Bay? For example: By bus, taxi, train, etc. |

The cheapest and ironically the fastest way is by bus. Buses leave from Ha Noi To Ha Long Bay all the time. Last time I went, the bus set me back about 30,000 VND one way (a little less than $2 US). The back seat is the most comfortable ride. If you want a thrill, sit in the front seats.
Why is the bus faster? Vietnam rules of the road, especially in the North, tend to follow the laws of physics. The bigger vehicle gets the right of way. |

Until now, the best method to reach Halong Bay from Hanoi is by bus/car. It will take you about 3 hours to cover 170km from Hanoi to Halong City and the bus costs you USD3/way/person only (Local bus).
You can also take a taxi, but it will be very expensive $50
Until now, there is no trains from Hanoi-Halong. If you like this, just wait for some tens of years -:)
There is another very easy and convenient way to reach Halong from Hanoi is by hilicopter, take you 40 minutes to go but very expensive $ 90/way or $150/return

If you are going on any type of cruise on the bay your booking agent should have included transport. Bus is the most inexpensive way to go. A taxi will cost you almost as much as a 2 day tour. So go with your hotel booking agent. This is kind of a no brain-er. The hotels are equipped for this kind of thing. It may cost you just a little more but its worth it.

You can directly book the seat in coach departure tour to the junks such as Huong Hai, Bai Tho, Hai Long, Tropical Sails...
includinng the bus transfer from/to Hanoi and the boat trip ( day trip or 2 days 1 night package on board... )

You can go by car. Of course, you have to buy ticket and it costs 4 hours to go to Hanoi to Ha long bay. Train is ok too. But taxi is very expensive. |
