i actually did the same kind of thing
we got a little help with our train tickets, and made a few stops along the way, at hue, nha trang and hoi an.
the train trips are quiet long, so i would stack up on food along the way, because the food on board is rather dull.
personally i loved the beach at hoi an, and although i did like the beach at nha trang, i just found there were too many tourist boats around at the time.
