You're talking about arranged marriages that happened almost 100 years ago in Vietnam. We still hold the traditional marriage such as a guy's family has to ask the girl's family for their marriage. But that doesn't mean it's an arranged marriage. In Western culture, the guy just slips a ring on the girl's finger, she's now engaged. It's not like that in Vietnam.
This traditional is to let our relatives, friends, and neighbors know that the couple are now married. That's why it is difficult to get a divorce in Vietnam since everyone knows you marry that person.If any difficulty in a marriage, we always try to work it out because we don't want to hurt people around us.

I would not be surprised if arranged marriages are still done among at least some of the 54 different ethnic groups in Viet Nam. I know several young Vietnamese ladies who are being pressured by their parents to get married, although I don't think the parents (who are Kinh) are proposing arranged marriages.
