I'm teaching esl here in Vietnam now.
Saigon is the best paying, however it is 20th most densely populated city in the world. That means you put up with terrible traffic (as dangerous as it is annoying), pollution, noise, and other things that go along with a huge city.
From what I hear, and my research (I read a few books on South Korea), yes, there are some hogwans that will open and close, and not pay their teachers. Finding work in S. Korea online is dangerous and risky.
Going there directly, seeing who is hiring, talking to their other teachers, is the best way to find out about a school.
Thailand is the teachers choice, the people there are friendly, happy, the air is clean (excluding bkk), but because people WANT to teach there, the pay is pretty low.
Don't forget China. A lot of people have gone to China and liked it. The Middle East is not a happy place to go, but it pays well. Generally you end up living in a "compound." Your pay is incredible, although from the filipinas I know who have worked there, the people are just terrible. Sorry, just passing on what i've heard.
So, if you want to find work, and find it easy, saigon is the place to go. But, you won't meet anyone who's been here for a while who will say, "wow, I'd like to stay here forever!"
In Thailand, a lot of people want to make the permanent transition and live there for the rest of their lives. |
