I've lived there. It is a great place.
City is good if you're interested in history/culture and there are many interesting sites to visit within 100 km from the city center.
If you go further -- e.g. towards Dien Bien Phu -- the scenery becomes breathtaking during spring. |

Been there 2x.
Hanoi is good for historical buffs: the numerous temples, lakes, old town. If you're going to Hanoi, make an effort to go to Ha Long Bay, about 3-4 hrs away - better weather in the summer that will give you breathtaking view, foggy and cold in the winter - no fun. Also, visit Chua Huong (Perfume temple- funny translation) it's as crowded as NY Times Square on New Year day around Tet - so don't go at that time.
It's one of those been there done that place. I would hang out more in the South - better food, shopping and fun places to go to. So why i was there 2x? ... cuz I took 2 friends on 2 different trips that was born in VN but left the country when they were young, now they want to see the country.

Vietnam is a fantastic place to travel - Hanoi is a can't miss city on your tour of the country. Also consider visiting Saigon, Hue and Hoi Anh. |
