Ho Chi Minh City for New Year - where to stay/go out?
I'll be staying in Ho Chi Minh on New Year's Eve with some friends. Where's a good place to stay (thinking cheap, clean and cheerful - needn't be a "hotel" per se)? More importantly, where should we party that night? Nowhere TOO swanky! Thanks!
(p.s any recommendations of places to visit within 4 hours max of HCMC that are a bit off the beaten track - "hidden gems" if you like - that'd be grand too!)
Caravelle Hotel rooftop bar and restaurant - perfect to watch the festivities in the street below. Stay off the streets (i.e., no motorbike) as people will be drinking way too much and doing dumb things.
HCMC always has live concerts for New Year's eve. Televised too!
Have a great time.

Not really a place to go but just a tip to be careful if you walk somewhere because the traffic is crazy and when you try to cross streets you have to be careful because they don't really stop. Sorry if you already know this. Um not sure of anything in Ho Chi Minh but when I was in Vietnam we went to an MTV club a few hours away. Not sure of the exact location though sorry. I know this isn't anything you asked for but if you like icecream Bach Dang Ice Cream 28 Le Loi Street District 1 in Ho Chi Minh City is very good. The best hotel I know of in District 1 is the Rex Hotel but it is abit expensive around 150 a night depending on what you want but it is very nice.
