If you are a backpacker, the best place in Hanoi is the Hanoi Backpacker's Hostel. In 2004-2005 I spent 8 months traveling through Asia, and this is the only place that stands out to me so much that I would recommend it emphatically.
They were very new when I stayed there. They had clean beds, big, secure lockers, free coffee and tea, free Internet access, a rooftop bar. It was a great place to meet other traveler. The staff was very friendly.
If you aren't a backpacker or you need your own room, this place might not be for you, but you are, you really should check this place out. |

I recommend Heritage, though it is closer to West Lake, a 10-15 minutes taxi ride away from the City Center.

I staid at Trung Nam Hai Hotel in July and it was nice. It has a lift to go to the top floors, Cable TV, Free Internet, Free Breakfast, Fridge, with all taxes and fees included in the price.
