Izzy beat me to it!

Why don't you be brave and GO to Vietnam? See what reality is, not float along with your ignorance, thinking what you think it is. But actually, if you went to VN, you might give the Vietnamese you met a bad impression of visiting tourists. Why don't you stay home, and accept the idea that maybe you are wrong, REALLY WRONG!!!

This is the kind of question I expect to be posted by someone who hasn't done their homework.

First of all, Vietnam has the fastest growing economy in SE Asia.
It is the third largest rice Exporter in the world, and the second largest coffee exporter.

By the way, Vietnam is the SAFEST country in the world in which to live. We don't worry about terrorists here at all.

Advanced to technology? In which way? I have both a Motorola and Nokia cell phone and typing this at home on my HP computer with broadband internet and a large touchscreen.

Most cafe's in Hanoi and HCMC have WiFi.

Vietnam already has a Nuclear Medicine Research Institute and will soon have 2-3 nuclear power reactors (with the USA's blessing).

Advanced to technology? Mercedes Benz', BMW, Audi, Ford, Chevy, Bentleys and even a Lamborghini can be seen on the streets here.

Advanced to technology?
The farmers here use the Internet to help plan their crops, and to sell them at market.

Your comment about "damn communism" shows you have no experience with either that political system or Vietnam itself.

While Vietnam is "officially" communist, it is actually a benevolent socialism more than anything else. Freedom of expression is tolerated to a certain extent (yes, except opposing political views or anything which would harm society...no different than trying to attend a Bush rally wearing a "GOP sucks pin) and making money is ENCOURAGED.

The Vietnam stock market was blazing for for a while which resulted in many instant millionaires. The government had to cool things down to keep it from overheating. It's becoming more stable and normal now.

I am an American citizen who has been living in Vietnam for almost 17 years. I thought exactly the same as you did when I first came here, but I have learned.

I suggest you do the same.

(Note: Hey Traveller...you vote yet?)

Vietnam is advancing by leaps and bounds. Your information is old old old. the economy is growing every year. Fiber optic cables enable internet communication, industry is growing. What do you want. Come over and check it out. Ho Chi Minh City will keep you busy and entertained at the same time.

Everything just needs time to develop. Economy development, followed by advance to technology is the same.

Look at the U.S.: In the world wars, the U.S. had the advantage of geography to stand out of the war destructions. In the world wars, the U.S. also sold a lot of weapons to make a lot of money and invested back into the economy development. As the result, the UK was no longer the number one economy, but the U.S.

Look at Japan: After the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the end of World War II, the U.S. dumped a lot of money into Japan from 1945 to 1950. In 1948, the U.S. also sent Joseph Dodge to Japan to help with economy problems at the time (inflation, economy crisis ...). The Japanese people worked hard and the Japanese exporters repatriated their dollar earnings from the U.S. to Japan, the Japanese economy boomed like skyrocketed, especially from 1955 to 1973, when GDP grew > 10% each year. In 1960, GNP of Japan started to pass Canada, around 1965 > UK and France, 1968 > Germany, 1973 -> GNP of Japan claimed the second position in the world. The successful factors were: cheap workforce, hard-working, education strategy, technology revolution, high investment, price of oil was still very low ... and the demands of the U.S. in the Vietnam World on the things the U.S. bought from Japan with military contracts.

Look at India and China: Both of them also consider education is one of the important strategies to push the economy grow. Cheap workforce with educated people was one of the successful factors to attract huge amount of investments from 10 years ago until now. From the poor countries, India and China economies are growing fast. While India is famous with software outsourcing, China had many factories which manufactures many high-tech products, including electronics or computers. Don't say "damn communism" because China is also a communism country.

Vietnam is pretty much the same. However, the Vietnam War ended very late in 1975 after fighting against French, Japanese, the U.S. (actually there was also a small fight with China in 1979). After the war, everything was destroyed (by both the war and some "stupid" mistakes of some people at that time). Said but true, the government also had many mistakes which slowed down the economy development in about 10 years before "Doi Moi" campaign. After lunch "Doi Moi" campaign (which is only about 20 years ago), the economy in Vietnam started to experience constantly growing as one of the fastest growing economies in Asia. Education was also considered as one of the most important strategies. With cheap workforce, educated people ... Vietnam also attracted a lot of investments recently, including FDI and none-FDI. 10 years ago, you might not see any BMW on the streets, but today the business owner of Hoang Anh Gia Lai Corporation can even have his own air-plane. Today Vietnam has only mainly known as the country which exports clothes, shoes, rice ... but 10 years later I believe you will see many hi-tech products made in Vietnam.

Everything just needs time to develop. In fact, Vietnam just had about 20 years in real economy development. Things will change every year, every month or even every day.

Everything just needs time to develop.

Wake up and smell the coffee man, have you been to Vietnam lately??? one of the fastest growing country in the South East.

I don't like this Question, just think about it,

Guns and bullets use to be swords,
Cars and trucks use to be carriges and horses

Look it here, we wanna say that we've "advanced" in technology, but all we've really done is has found a better way to kill ourselves

Think about that.
