In almost all places in the world, it works this way:

-- in order to get a work permit, you need to have a local company apply for you. in other words, you need to have a job before you can get a work permit.
I know this is also the case in VN.

-- there are often a special visa class for retired people. they will then not be allowed to work and must show proof that they will not (financially) be a burden to the host country.
I don't know if this is also the case in VN

Do you speak English, or are you American?

If you speak English, any number of English language schools are always looking for people to teach it.

Vietnam is constantly relaxing visa restrictions in making it easier to visit and stay there. A special visa for Viet Kieu (foreign living Vietnamese) and their children has just recently been made available, which makes it easier to stay long and revisit more often. In the past, my standard tourist visa as an American citizen was good for 30 days with 30 day extensions. Now, my visa as a child of a Viet Kieu allows me to stay for 90 days with 90 days extensions. Plans are in the works for American Vietnam Veteran visas in making it easier to obtain a visa and have the run of the country for as long as they want (you reading this Ong Jon?).

It’s still pretty easy to extend stay even if you’re not a Vietnam Veteran, not a Viet Kieu or your mom’s not Vietnamese. The easiest way is to get a job while there. English teaching jobs are easy to find, and usually pay pretty well. Your potential employee can sponsor a work visa for you.

If you keep in mind why you have a Visa in Vietnam, you can easily find creative ways to stay as long as you want. Your visa is not to regulate how many foreigners come to Vietnam. It is to protect you while in Vietnam, and that is why it’s pretty easy to get an extended visa. You can find churches, service clubs, humanitarian projects or others who can sponsor you for extended stay.

You should contact the Vietnam Embassy or consulate for more information on this. Here’s their Web site:

what you have[ my guess] is an american tourist visa.. yes of course you can extend that once your are there about 25 days [ i know thats cutting it close ] but if &when you work there you will be able to get a work visa .. i believe they are good for at least 6 months. even tourist visas obtained out of the usa [ cambodia for example ] can get you more time.. the hard part is not getting permission to stay but getting a job.. unless you posses a particular skill "they" need.

As far as I know, most of the people who work here have only 6-months tourist visas. ( about $ 85)

You come here with the 1-month visa and after that ask for the 6-months. But you must give an address in Vietnam.

Ronin
U need to find a job in Vietnam or talk to someone u know living in Vietnam, who can help you. Easy.

Bone
You will just have to keep extending it. I would imagine that once you have lived there for a few months the authorities may grant you a longer term.
