I've been interested in genealogy lately. My mom's surname is Nguyen, is there anyway to know if my family is related to royals in Vietnam?
Also, where can I find a good genealogist in San Jose,CA?

HQTrang pretty much said it all. There are Nguyen is a very popular name. I roughly know about7-8 people who are named that who are nowhere near related to each other, how WOULD you think you'd be royal anyways? |

Nguyá»…n is the most common in Vietnam, and 40% Vietnamese owns Nguyá»…n as their family name. But it doesn't mean they are from one family, coz there have been mass surname changes in the past, esp. during the Nguyá»…n Dynasty (the last dynasty of Vietnam).
@Hikaru : You're right! Công Tằng Tôn Nữ is one of royal surname or title or sth like that for FEMALE royal members. CTTN is assigned for great grand daughters of King Minh Mạng. Others include Công Huyá»n Tôn Nữ (great-great-grand-daughters) and Lai Huyá»n Tôn Nữ (great-great-great-grand-daughters). For male, their family names could be Tôn Thất, or Nguyá»…n Phúc, or sometimes simply a word from the "Poem of Royal Generation".
However, you can only own these surnames if your father has also.
