How do I travel around vietnam?
I don' t know wether to book hotels once there so I have free roam and just get a single flight so I have no ties as to where I end up? Would backpacking alone be easy like this?
There are a number of reputable agencies that offer an open bus ticket which is really great for back-packers to get around Vietnam. Check out www.virtualtourist.com as well as www.tripadvisor.com for good info. One of the best agencies in Vietnam is www.sinhcafevn.com. Also see www.seat61.com - an excellent resource for info on trains. I've done tons of research for our upcoming trip and I can tell you that there is a wide range of accommodation for all manner of budgets. Although we have booked all ours because we have a very tight schedule, I don't think you'd have any problem with finding budget accommodation on arrival.

You can travel by train, plane, bus, boat, motorcycle, bicycle, or hire a car. Buses are not the safest option - higher risk of accidents since they drive fast and furious.
The only place you might run into problems with the authorities might be in the border zones. They won't bother you otherwise.

Backpacking in Vietnam is very different to the rest of south east asia. The government have strict regulations on where tourists can and can't go so it's really difficult to get off the beaten track. It is the same with the hotels, you can't find super cheap places because the government has set a minimal standard that all hostels and hotels must meet. It's still relatively cheap. I backpacked around South East asia on my own as a single blonde white girl when I was 20 and I had no problems at all.

The previous post is not true. The fact is, you can travel as a backpacker very easily around VN. Transportation is not excellent, but you always have a way. And no minimum price for hotel by government, It's a free market. It costs you about 10$ a day for a cheap hotel with hot water, TV and stuffs.
