I was a judge for a beauty pageant circuit in Southern California for a few years, and I know the process for contestants competing for Miss California, Miss America, Miss USA, etc. The process to compete for Miss Vietnam will be somewhat similar if Miss Vietnam is to be a contestant for Miss Universe, Miss World or Miss Globe.
The process in the U.S. starts with a local or regional beauty pageant. The pageant itself must be approved by a state level pageant for the local or regional queen to qualify as a state pageant contestant. In other words, Miss Anaheim can qualify for Miss California, but Miss Hawaiian Tropic cannot. Upon winning a state pageant, the state queen will qualify to represent her state in either the Miss America or Miss USA pageants depending on which organization endorsed the state pageant that she won. Miss America and Miss USA are different pageant organizations that crown their queens separately.
Vietnam doesn’t have states, so the process will be different from the U.S. I’m pretty sure that a contestant must still be a queen or endorsed to represent a local or regional area as a qualification to be a contestant for Miss Vietnam. In other words, you can’t walk off the street from nowhere and compete for Miss Vietnam. You have to be a queen or replace the queen of a local or regional competition to compete for Miss Vietnam.
Technically, there can be two Miss Vietnam. One aligns with the Miss World organization and the other aligns with the Miss Universe organization. Miss Vietnam has been a regular contestant in the Miss World competition, but has not been as regular in the Miss Universe competition. This is because Miss World accepts over 100 contestants, while Miss Universe accepts only about 80 and Miss Vietnam debut into the Miss Universe competition was in 2004. I believe the one Miss Vietnam represents Vietnam in both the Miss World and Miss Universe competition.
The Miss Vietnam Global competition is a separate organization from the traditional beauty pageants. MFC Media Entertainment operates this pageant. This is a walk-on pageant, but that doesn’t mean your cousin can submit an application, show up and compete. Usually, contestants in this type of pageant are pre-selected by agents, sponsors or referrals. It is obviously a Vietnamese only pageant and most of the contestants are from the U.S. You can call them to find out more. Here’s a number that I found: 888.308.1188
