As a Vietnamese, I'd be bias if you ask me about my country. We still have lot of good memories and tie with Vietnam no matter where we live. I couldn't see me being someone else besides Vietnamese.

Vietnamese people are the most forgiving people in the world. The Chinese, Japanese, French, American were all invading us but we have animosity against them.

The scenery is pretty and some haven't totally tamed by war. Dalat is my favorite place obviously because that where I came from. Good memories.. love the city and will never forget a great childhood there.

I just returned (grudgingly) to the US after having lived in VN for the last 4 years. Easy to travel around, wonderful people, really good food, lots to do and see. I would go back on a heart beat, or preferably with a contract.

I've been there a couple of times, and being English, I don't have any American imperialist baggage. I love the place, the people are friendly and helpful, the scenery is stunning, although the air in Ho Chi Minh City can be "challenging" because of the little motor cycles (and it's amazing what is carried on them!). Nha Trang on the coast is well worth a visit (there is a luxury train called the 5 Star from HCMC which is well worth ther price and so is Dalat (the Paris of the Orient), so your trip does not need to be based around the war.

More in response to first answer. Never been there since the draft ended just in time for me. I never hear much negative about Vietnam as a nation. Vietnam seems to be a good world citizen. As an American I respect the Vietnamese people. I believe Vietnam could make a very good ally. My uncles fought in Vietnam. I would have fought if I were asked to. Yet I do believe that war was a tragedy and a mistake.

I just came back from Vietnam. Went to Ho Chi Minh city. The people are generally helpful and friendly. However, crossing the roads with full of motorbikes can be a challenge to tourists! Ha!

I think the most unforgettable experience is going through the low Cu Chi tunnels. See my new posts on Vietnam with video on traffic! http://travelerfolio.com

I really enjoy Vietnam. We visit it every summer vacation for at least a month. My favorite city is Hue with all it's ancient citidel and palace. It has great Hue food, the people are so friendly and very safe. My favorite too as it is where our family lives.

My second place that I try to visit every summer is HaNoi. The sites are great, shopping is fantastic and the food is wonderful. There are so many day trips you can take from here, i.e. Purple Pagoda, Red River Cruises, HaLong Bay, HaiPhong and Cat Ba Isand just to name a few. There are so many nice Beer Gardens with Bia Hoi to visit.

Have a great trip. Cheers C

well. I'm only 14 but i just came back from vietnam after spending my summer holidays there. It is a very polluted and noisy place (especially in the city) and petty crime is high but i find the people who live there have a very close sense of community. The people really care about each other e.g. i was spending a day at my aunties house and we decided to take a photo outside of it. i was holding a brand new sony cyber shot camera when a man on a motor bike came pass and stole it out of my hand. But it was what happened next that really suprised me. The onlookers sitting in a cafe next to my aunties house jumped onto there motorbikes and chased down the man while driving on the wrong side of the street. they didnt manage to find him but were really concerned for my, and my family's safety which i found very comforting.
while the scenery of the country is beautiful, the hearts of the people is even better.

I love the people of Vietnam, but I hate their repressive and corrupt communist government

It's a nice country. For tourist, it's not fully developed which is very nice to travel in virgin country. But for people there, I do beleive they need more develope which will lead their country down in many issues. I don't mean in human-creation but I mean good envirnment & nice mind of native people.
