How does the internet work in Vietnam?

Im going to VN for the winter and of course, I need to check my email and whatnot. So how does the internet work in VN; is it the same as using the internet here in the US? Do they have DSL or high speed internet? And if i bring my laptop, how do I connect to their internet since i dont have Wifi? Plus, is it also safe to be using their internet? And any other information i need to know about the internet use in Vietnam?
And another question, What is the weather like in Saigon, VN during the month of December? What kind of clothing should i prepare for the trip? Thanks for any help!!

Q: So how does the internet work in VN;
A: Internet access is more widely available in Vietnam than many would believe. High speed access is predominantly through ADSL. WiFi hotspots are sparse but increasing all the time. District 1 in Ho Chi Minh City probably has the most WiFi hotspots thanks to all the hotels and coffee shops with wifi Internet.

Q: Is it the same as using the internet here in the US?
A: The Internet is the same everywhere. However, accessing the Internet is going to be different. Most Viets use Internet cafés because there is an abundance of them, usage is very cheap (about 5 to 10 cents/hour) and computers are a bit costly for a typical Viet to purchase themselves.

Q: Do they have DSL or high speed internet?
A: DSL is also considered high speed Internet access. Vietnam uses predominantly ADSL because phone service is more widely available than cable or other possible Internet conduits.

Q: If i bring my laptop, how do I connect to their internet since i dont have Wifi?
A:
1) Bring your laptop to an Internet café’ and plug into their LAN. Most will do so without additional charge other than regular usage fee.
2) Use Internet through a cell phone service. Three cell phone services in Vietnam (Viettel, VNPT, EVN Telecom) provide Internet access. EVA is probably the cheapest for Internet service at thisn time. here’s their Web site: http://enet.vn .
3) Have ADSL installed where you will be staying. If you are close to an Internet café, the café can run a network cable to your place so you don’t have to go to the Internet café to use the Internet. Cost for this is pretty cheap (about $8/month + cost of the cable).

Q: Is it also safe to be using their internet?
A: Internet in Vietnam is just like Internet in the United States. Unlike China, Vietnam does not restrict or content filter the Internet.

Q: Any other information i need to know about the internet use in Vietnam?
A: I would suggest bringing a network cable and purchasing a wireless network card. You do not want to purchase such items in Vietnam as the quality of electronics there is terrible.

Q: What is the weather like in Saigon, VN during the month of December?
A: Vietnam is entering it’s dry season. It will be very hot and humid.

Q: What kind of clothing should i prepare for the trip?
A: It’s going to be hot and humid so dress as if you’re going to the beach. I would suggest bringing enough clothes for a few days and buying everything there. Clothing, shoes, etc. is very cheap in Vietnam.

Have a great trip!

Acutally it is very good there..and also safe to use. In some places, they have a place where people who speak english, get to use computers that are NOT in vietnamese. The weather there is very hot, as I have heard and there I also heard that there is lots of bugs at night and moquitos that bit you, so when you eat put your feet up on the table, and don't worry they allow you to do that!

Best of luck~

the Internet in VN is OK. It is very very slow if you want to check an email. They use DSL line, but share to a lot of terminals, so make single PC slow down.
If you don't have Wifi in your laptop, why don't you buy the wireless card to plug into your laptop in bestbuy or other electronic stores in US.
Weather is fine around December. You may bring your light jacket. If you plan to ride motorcycle in Saigon, they make you wear helmet. You can buy cheap one in US to use in VN. When you leave Saigon, sell your helmet for people over there.
Have good time in VN

in Vietnam, internet is popular, you can use internet in coffe shop or hotel by wireless or cable...speed is very good and using internet is safe.
Sai gon ( or Ho Chi Minh City) has 2 seasons: sunny and rainy..In December, the weather is very fresh and not cold so you dont need to bring sweater..
If you come to Saigon, call me:0913697527 or email me: kimtuan234@yahoo.com, i will help you ...!
