If you are far away then the best way is to fly, natually.
But then again you can take an ocean cruise that will take you up the Mekong River to TPHCM which is such a romantic way to enter any city.
Or you can go overland from any of the neighbouring countries (of course you have to get to them first), but the overland bit is quite exciting.
For me, I'd fly to Bangkok and go through Cambodia to Saigon or through Laos to Hanoi, either way you'll enjoy some fantastic experiences that will never leave you.

It depends on where do you live, If you are from Asia, it is pretty easy to get a cheap flight to Vietnam there are such big cheap airline firms such as AirAsia, Tiger Airways or even Vietnam Airlines.
