For along time during the colonial period, all the book of higher learning ( medical, mathematic, philosophy...) were imported from France and in French. That's why most educated Vietnamese over 60 years old speak French. From the same period we learned to like the cafe's, bakeries, vacations in cooler climate.

It was once a French colony.

.
french were there for 100 years.

nguyenthanhtungtinbk
Not much, maybe some cultural things like bakery for instance.

saigonita
Oh, yes, very.
They took Vietnam as their colony for 100 years.
If you go to Dalat , a charming city near Saigon, people will address you in French.
I recommend you the film Indochine.
Au revoir.

the French set up colonies in VN in the past... then they get ousted by the North Vietnamese in the 1950's

Sniper
Vietnam was a French colony from 1865 till 1954!!!

Keith
The French were there for about 100 years. Much of Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) looks like Paris and New Orleans. Red tile roofs everywhere. Vietnamese people may ask you something in their language and if you don't understand, they will ask "Parlez-vous français ?

SkyKing
none.....beside their french bread...and Da Lat as the "2nd Paris"

Heisenberg
Before the Americans went there, the French were there.

wikipedia.org - look for Viet Nam. You will find coutnless pages of a rich and interesting history.
