It is 447km from Ho Chi Minh to Nha Trang.
You can travel by car, train and air line. However, airline is the most common way and it is not expensive so I think it is the best choice.

The cheapest one is BUS!
It takes about 9 hours of the bus ride from Ho Chi Minh City to Nha Trang. You can go to Pham Ngu Lao and De Tham street. Have got many daily departure from this quartier to Nha Trang.

PS: the new Express Train High Class just launched ( but expensive ) :

The 5 Star Express Train has 10 carriages including six for some 360 passengers and other coaches for restaurant and bar, healthcare center, conferences and massages, among other recreational activities.

It departs Ho Chi Minh at 6:15am before taking a break at Muong Man Station (9h39) and Thap Cham Station (11h51) en route to Nha Trang for a 1:33pm arrival.

The return journey is scheduled to depart from Nha Trang at 2:55pm via Thap Cham Station (16h34) and Muong Man Station (19h37) to stop in Ho Chi Minh at 11:18pm.

I would fly or take the train. If you don't care if you die, by all means take the bus. Look at the stats for bus accidents, you'll be amazed at the amount of people who die every month. The bus drivers are crazy. When we were there in February, a bus tried to beat the train at a crossing. He killed 16 people including himself. Stuff like that happens everyday

In my experiences, it is usually cheaper to take a car/van/bus. Not only that, but you can also see the sights.

HCMC to Nha Trang is approx 8-9 hrs driving time if you go on the bus. This is also the cheapest.

Check out the travel agents around Pham Ngu Lao (Backpacker area in Dist 1 HCMC) they all sell bus tix. I have found that Sinh Cafe is generally the better.

You can also fly or catch the train as mentioned above!

Try sinh cafe and travel.They have several locations in ho chi minh.The one on de tham street in district 1 is the one I always use when I`m in vietnam It is across the street from my father in laws.You can book a tour or just the bus ride to nha trang.they were the best priced I found.

Travel by car is good for sightseeing but for me, I prefer taking a train from SG to Nha Trang. It departs at 10PM and arrive NT at 5AM in the next morning, you will have plenty of time to go around city.
