How many days is a good amount of time to spend in Ho Chi Minh City? |
I've never been there before, am thinking of visiting in February.
Can you give some recommendations on what to do, where to go etc please?

Ok, here we go...
If you want to see the sights in HCM City (Saigon), you'll need about four days minimum to take in the Cu Chi Tunnels, Mekong Delta, etc.
However, if you just wanna shop your head off, 2-3 days is enough.
Do NOT take a bus to Ha Noi. The train is better than the bus and you can get a sleeper, but the best option is to fly. It's only $200 or less (RT) and less of a headache.
You mentioned coming in February, bring warm clothes because it DOES get very cold here in Ha Noi in Winter (8 - 15 C).
If you decide to head up to Lao Cai (Sapa), you will need real warm clothes as it sometimes gets a light dusting of snow...
As for safety, Vietnam is the SAFEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD. No worries about terrorism here.
However, the general rules of travel for a woman apply in every country and every big city. Try ti find other ladies to hang with..strength in numbers, etc.

Many females travel alone in Vietnam or team up with another traveler they meet along the way. February in Ho Chi Minh will be hot and humid 33 - 37 degrees Celsius.
As for how many days, it depends on how much you wish to see, and how that falls into the total time of your trip. Ho Chi Minh is an extremely busy city with much to do. Give HCM atleast 3 - 5 days to take in many of the sites. There is always Cui Chi Tunnels and Mekong Delta tours to ad to your visit for day excursions while in HCM as well. |

I agree 3 to 5 days and take in the Cui Cui tunnels & the Mekong Delta. If you stay longer try a trip to Da Lat.
Do not go to the Zoo & Botanical gardens - they are very depressing.
Find Sinh Cafe in the tourist area - they are the best place for organised trips and general bus transport.
You can travel to Ha Moi by bus or train but it is a very long journey (and uncomfortable) so flight is a better option and fairly cheap.
Last time I was there I did the trip by a combination of mini-bus and general bus taking in Da Lat, Hoi An, Hue (well worth a visit) and Vinh (Ho Chi Minh's birthplace is nearby) - but I had plenty of time to do it.
