What youâ€™re asking for will vary between cities and even within the same city in Vietnam. It will also vary with the quality of hotel you want to stay at as well as the type of food you want to eat and where you eat. Furthermore, I believe you want the cost of living index in Vietnam so you can better determine what you will spend on a trip or vacation there.

The simple way to explain the cost of living index is how much a dollar (or VND) will purchase in Vietnam compared to the same dollar (or VND) in the U.S. An economistâ€™s definition will include differences in rent, transportation, food, utilities, hotel room or other items that one would usually purchase to sustain them compared to doing the same in another region or country.

The current cost of living between the U.S. and Vietnam is around 1:8. This means one U.S. dollar in the U.S. will purchase about eight times more in Vietnam (this will vary between cities and rural areas). The buying power of a dollar earned in the U.S. and spent in Vietnam is one of the reasons why Vietnam has become a very attractive tourist destination for Americans. Putting it bluntly, it is very cheap for Americans to travel in Vietnam. Following are some examples to exemplify this:

One night at Motel 6 in San Diego will cost between $30-$50. One night at a one star hotel in District 1, Saigon will cost about $10-$20. A three star hotel in Thai Binh (a rural province South of Hai Phong) will cost about $15.

Tap beer from a bar in the U.S. will cost around $2-$5. Bia Hoi (gas or tap beer) in Saigon or Hanoi costs between 20 to 50 cents.

A bowl of pho at a restaurant in Westminister, CA will cost between $3 - $7. A bowl of pho from a street vendor in Hanoi will cost around 50 cents.

A cup of hot tea at Dennyâ€™s will cost about $1.00 - $2.00. A cup of hot tea virtually anywhere in Vietnam usually costs nothing. (tea is almost as plentiful as water in Vietnam).

The cost of living index is irrelevant of the currency being used, but it is usually based on the U.S. dollar to make it easier to compare. Multiply all of the above by 16,000 (the approximate exchange rate between USD & VND) to determine the cost of living in VND. Ex: one draft beer in Saigon will cost between 3,200 â€“ 8,000 VND.

To help you better determine your travel budget for Vietnam. If you had $1,000 USD in Vietnam, you can live like a king for a month. You can stretch $1,000 over a couple months and still live high on the hog if you know what youâ€™re doing. Most Viets will live on less than $300/month.

it depends on your taste... there are hotels where there CHEAPEST room is $250us a day[4,000,000vn dong]..nice safe clean mini hotels.. $10us[160,000vn per day].... food ;upscale prices[ fancy hotel restaurant] $15us buffet breakfast... on the street you can eat for less than $1 per meal.. the normal tourist resturant is about 50,000 vn dong per meal with drink. tea:..i never paid for a cup of tea in vn , its usually free... coffee, anywhere from 3,000vn to 32,000 vn depending where you go....

I probably spent 250.000 VND the last time I stayed in a hotel (another hotel that I used to stay at in another town cost me 200.000/night). It seems a bowl of pho for breakfast was around 12.000 VND. And tea was 1.500 or 2.000 for a cup.

As others have said, it depends on where and what you are looking for. Go to the local western-run pizza joint and you are looking at a lot more!

from recollection of 2 years back there where about 30,000 to the british pound, a decent room in Saigon (with tv and
a/c) cost about 150,000 dong

a coffee on a street cafe about 2000 dong
an omplette in a baguette also roughtly 2000 dong, a bowl of noodles was about 2000 Dong however have a burger and a coffee in a tourist oriented bar and you can pay 5 or 10 times these figures. I am pretty sure i recall correctly, however this will no doubt give you an idea it is cheap cheap cheap
