Michael is dead right, you have to remember they don't care how much you bring in as long as you declare it,and the reason you have to declare it on entry is to prevent you taking out more cash than you brought when you leave, which they definitely don't like.I know one guy who brought in 300,000 usd, declared it ,no problem,

Michael
Foreign currency (including cash, coin and travelers’ cheques) in excess of US$7,000, cash exceeding Vietnamese Dong (VND) 5,000,000, and gold exceeding 300 grams must be declared at customs upon arrival and departure and supported by appropriate documentation. If excess cash is not declared, it can be confiscated at the port of entry/exit and the passenger may be arrested and/or fined.

Last time I was in Vietnam, which was August of 2007, If you bring more than $5000 US dollars, you must declared on the paper that they will give you upon arival, which will be givin by the airline. Make sure you dollars is in mint condition, you will get better exchange rate with mint dollar bill..There you can exchange at any jewerly stores...or the bank.
In Vietnam, make sure your pockets has zipper, you will know what I mean...Don't exchange alot at the same time otherwise your pocket will be full of plastic moneys $100=1,607,300 Dong..was the lattest currency
Have fun in Vietnam..

As much as you want, as long as you declare it. You really dont have to bring that much because $100 United States Dollars is equal to $1,613,000.00 Vietnam Dong so there for your a millionair there. You really dont need that much unless you are planning to do business there. So if you stay a month all you need is about $3,000 United States Dollar and you will live like a king and have plenty to left over to bring home. So good luck and use a rubber band to wrap around you money so it wont get picked. and a lot of other rubber substance too to protect your self. : ) and have fun.
