How much money will I need for three weeks in Vietnam?

Well, Kevin, I guess it depends on what sort of lifestyle you want to live when you arrive.
When I was single, I would vacation here with my Viet-American friends and spend about $100 (USD) per day. As a tourist, you will undoubtedly be spending time at resorts where prices are much higher than the surrounding countryside. For instance, you can rent a jet-ski for about $50 an hour, drink coffee at the seaside for $1 a cup, etc.
Being "different" also costs more money here. Even if you are a fluent Vietnamese speaker raised in another country, your accent will be different and everyone will know you are a tourist and over here, all tourists are considered too wealthy for their own good lol.
If you do not speak Viet, learn to ask the price of everything (ba mew ting?) and be prepared to bargain wherever prices are not posted.
My ATM card currently costs me $6.19 to withdraw 2 million Viet Dong ($119). You would probably be better off bringing cash (euro or dollar) than using travelers cheques or the ATM. Also, Jewelery shops usually give a better exchange rate than the bank.
Five hundred pounds my be a bit on the low side for three weeks as a tourist. Bring six and try to stay on a budget.

I'll take $1000, but you might get rip off so your need to bargain big time. But it really depends on what you do there.
If you spend you money wisely than I guess you need about $400-$800.

Last time I was in Vietnam, 2 years ago, I used to spend around 100 thousand Vietnam dong per day. But I had free meals and a place to sleep. So assuming you don't have this stuff for free, you would probably spend something like 200-250 thousand per day..that's about 15 US dollars. How much you should take with you depends on how long you'll be there...you didn't post that here so I'll have to tell you to do the math. Have fun!

if you are comfortable in clean safe small back alley /back packer hotels, plain but good food.. you can get by with $50 us or less,travelers checks wok real well.if you need 5 star accommodations figure 2-3 hundred us a day..

$1 here is 16,000 in vietnam so bring about a couple hundred dollars, and plus the stuff there is cheap so spend! spend! spend!

I agree with Rick M. It all depends on you. Sure you can do the ''peasant's'' tour on 100'000 a day but if you're a party animal and intend letting your hair down then $200 a day might not be enough for you. Why not purchase a lockable money bag before you come over. Bring a $1000 and leave the locked bag with what you're not using in the hotel safe. ATMs are expensive. I've paid out over $5000 in withdrawal fees since I've been here because of the 2 million dong limit per withdrawal however Agribank now lets customers withdraw 5 million per withdrawal and the Commonwealth Bank of Australia's branch in Ho Chi Minh City allows customers to withdraw 10 million in one go. Be conscious of your personal security and have a good holiday.

You can get a lot more things for less. I think that besides plane tickets, the hotel and all other necessities, take about $700.

It really depends on what kind of vacation you want to enjoy. Do you want to travel? or find a hotel adn settle there for the whole three weeks?

If you want to travel than bring more. You should also plan some back up just in case some crazy incident happens. Which happens alot more than you think.

Vietnam is probably more expensive than you think, but it'll depend on where you spend you time. In Hanoi or Saigon is expensive but in smaller cities it's much cheaper. I'd say $600-800 for 3 weeks and you won't have to worry too much about money.
