This is a picture of a girl in ao dai: http://a8.vietbao.vn/images/vn801/van-hoa/11060343-ao-dai-Lam-2.jpg . Take a look and maybe it'll help.

Wearing ao dai is just like wearing a shirt, put the arms in then button it up. The hard part is the buttoning. But just follow them from the collar down and don't miss any button on the way down and it will be fine :)). And she should have someone else do the buttoning for her, maybe for the first few times until she can do it herself :).

And don't forget the pants =)). There's a story about a foreign woman wearing ao dai without the pants.

first slip it on like a coat
there should be buttons along a neck v line to the armput. so close those up. there's another one near the waist. and of course you wear it with pants (not jeans)

idk what kind of ao dai she has, I only know the traditional one

Darn it, Ong Jon, why'd you have to go and mention the pants??? I LMAO thinking about what would happen if a woman forgot them.

Anyway, the collar will have a V, that is the front. As OJ said, the collar stays up. Tell her to put the pants on first cause she sure isn't going to have much movement once the top is on.
I guess I'll spoil the fun too, by telling you that a Vietnamese woman would'nt be caught dead wearing one without a bra or camisole underneath.

@Ong Jon, My wife knows how to wear ao dai, but I'd be happy to show her the "American" way. lol

Here's an example:

Dress and the pant.

@ "rick m".. a vn nun once told me a story of a marine who sent his wife back in the states an ao dai.. he neglected to senfd the pants....story is she proudly wore her husbands gift sans slacks......you were a marine, weren't you ? lol
