If you like jazz, then you want to go to Minh's Place. It's about two blocks North of Hoan Kiem Lake. Ask anyone there, and they'll tell you exactly where it's at.
Whatever you do for nightlife in Ha Noi, you will have to finish it by midnight. Ha Noi isn't known for it's nightlife. On the other hand, there's places in Saigon that hasn't closed for over 10 years. Saigon compared to Hanoi is like Las Vegas compared to Sacramento, CA.
While you're in Ha Noi, you will want to visit Bia Toi Tiep (a.k.a. Bia Toilette) It is a very nice beer and restaurant joint not far fom Hoan Kiem Lake. Every expat and tourist has to visit Bia Toilette at least once when they are in Ha Noi.

We will be in HaNoi on 12 June. I'd suggest the A15 Bia Garden by Giang Vo Lake on Ngoc Khanh Street. Good cold cheap beer and great food; no live band though.
