If you want an ancient name, I suggest going as far back as possible since ancient history provides more romance upon reflection. The northern part of Vietnam was known as the kingdom of An Nam. The southern part of Vietnam was the Cham Kingdom. When An Nam conquered Cham, the latter ceased to exist. So it depends what you think is more romantic, the conquered or the conqueror.
Hope that helps.

Dai Co Viet was the name in the south for a while - this was a millennium ago.

Quoc Viet - nation of Viets
