From what you've described, you probably came to the U.S. as a refugee and never became naturalized. Some of my family was in the same situation and didn't think it was in issue until they made a visit to Mexico and got the bajeezers scared out of them by boarder patrol on the way back to the U.S.

The green card will allow you to travel in and out of the U.S. and work here, but it does nothing to allow you travel into or through another country. You need a passport and proper visa for that. If you've legally lived in the U.S. for more than five years, you can become naturalized and then receive a U.S. passport. If you are a former refugee Viet, naturalization for you is almost a rubber stamp process but not automatic. You have to go through the process to become naturalized.

Check this link for further information on naturalization: http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis/menuitem.5af9bb95919f35e66f614176543f6d1a/?vgnextoid=12e596981298d010VgnVCM10000048f3d6a1RCRD&vgnextchannel=96719c7755cb9010VgnVCM10000045f3d6a1RCRD

Good luck!

Get one from Vietnam

You have to be US citizen to get US passport.Yes, if you only have green card, you'll still be able to travel but you have to have a visa when travel abroad.

One of my family members didn't have a passport before she became US citizen when she travel to France. She was able to travel but she had to go to the French Embassy to get a visa. My family in France had to sign a paper assured that she only comes to visit, not to stay.

This is The Vietnam embassy web site here in the united state, address and phone number. You can find all kinds of info here.
www.Vietnamembassy-usa.org
1233 20th St NW, Suite 400 - Washington, DC 20036
tel. 202.861.0737
fax 202.861.0917

Talk to your ambassador, you should be able to get a Vietnam passport. If not, you can travel without a passport to vietnam, but when you get there, you need to obtain a passport before you can re-enter the united state.
