No. It was inconvenient if you go in that way. First, from Hongkong you must go to China to Quang chou and then to Nanning. In Nan ning you can buy ticket to hanoi. But you has to change another train when you were in border.

from guangzhou you may go to Nanning. there you can get train to hanoi.
Train depart from Nanning at 21:15 (from Mondays to Fridays)
change another train in border Dong Dang at 00:30
arrive Hanoi at 8:15 Am.
The fare is the equivalent of 46 Swiss francs (£21 or $38) if you buy your ticket at the ticket office.
You can book online from outside China/Vietnam through www.china-train-ticket.com
Also ask www.chinatripadvisor.com, as they may have cheaper rates
if you went to viet nam. You should visit Ha Long bay. It is nice place.
