Well you need to figure out when Tet is. I don't have that info on top of my head. But find out when is the Chinese New year, that's when Tet is. It's not wise to go visit someone on the first day of the year. The first day of the year determines what will happen for the rest of the year. So if someone who you don't want to see visit you, it means that the rest of the year will be bad luck with things you don't want. There are plenty of things that needed to be done prior to the new year though. You have to send the kitchen's god home in a ceremony. There are food to be made in offering. Most Vietnamese market probably have started selling these items. Look for things in brightly red packaging. Lots of pickled and sugared products. Also special glutonous rice cake with pork and beans filling are made, wrap in banana leaves. Oh, and there is also flower displays. Specifically "mai" ( for South Vietnames) which to plan for them to bloom in the new year, you have to pluck all their leaves out weeks in advance. Also on display are plum flowers.
I hope this helps...sorry, it's kinda hard to translate and cover everything. If you narrow to specific things that would be easier to answer I guess. |

Im in a hurry right now, so i just drop a quick answer. The Vietnamese celebrate Lunar New Year. It is called Tet, the most important holiday in the country. The new year day is 1st January of Lunar Calendar. But remember, Vietnamese and Chinese lunar calendar is not exactly the same. Also, the twelve animals they use are quite different from those chinese people use. For example, Vietnamese has Cat year, but no Rabbit year.
People always clean and re-decorate their houses beautifully. Because they have bonuses (from their jobs) for the holiday so people usually spend a lot of money for new furnitures, household equiments, etc. Also, they buy new clothes for the new year. It is actually something in old tradition because nowadays people are richer and they buy new clothes everyday in a year! Preparing special food is the time when family members gather and enjoy the atmosphere of "family work". In the past, family is bigger, usually 3 or more generations. They cooked, worked, did everything together. But now, the young generation go to supermarket for special food, pick up the phone for cleaning or decoration services or have servants do everything. On 23rd of the last month of the old year, people have a small ceremony to "say goodbye" to the Kitchen's gods. The Kitchen's gods are 1 woman and her two husbands. They are kind of symbol of "family". On the last day of the year, at lunch time, people have a ceremony to "say goodbye" to the ancestors. Needed to mention, in every vietnamese family, people worship their "ancestors" just like how they worship the Buddha. And this is now the time they say goodbye to the ancestors, for they will go to heaven to have new year party with the God of heaven. They will come back after the party, stay with their decestors and "help" them out. (That's why people have to worship them). On the New year Eve, people have ceremony to welcome the new year. Remember this is important thing. After this moment, you shouldnt go to ur friends' houses. It is important that the first person visit ur home must be the right person for ur family. If not, ur family will have bad lucks all the year. To avoid "wrong" person visit ur home at this time, family members usually say Happy new year to each others, eat something (special food from the ceremonies), and go to the temples to get "LUCKS" and come straight to home, it means you bring LUCKS straight to ur home and u have lucks all over the year. The first day, people seldom visit others due to the reason i have mentioned above. They wait until the 2nd day and people start go visiting neighbours, relatives, teachers and friends.
On 3rd day of the new year, they have a ceremony to welcome the ancestors back home. |

Têt will be on February 18.
Têt is the occasion of meeting the family. When the old ones miss, it is necessary to think of them by making to them offerings every day. The day before, it is the return of the divinities who left one week rather to the sky, to return account of our actions during the year. It is the common meal where we could have fun and drink a lot. The first day, we get dressed with nine and make wishes to the highest members of the family first and lastly to the children; to thank them, we offer money in red envelopes to them. We leave the house only on the second day to go to wish the good wishes to the close families and it is with the third that we can go to meet friends. In the street, there are often dances of dragon realising finances, owes the houses or the trade which wish it, to drive out the demons and to receive the good wishes. |
