If you go to Hanoi can you see the cell John McCain stayed in?

you can see some cells in a few diffrent prisons "hoa lo", [ha noi hilton] being the most notable.. wether they are actualy the cells that mc cain stayed in is questionable ..most of that prison has been torn down..there is in fact his actual flight suit and other memorbielia.. the ho lo prison now stands as a historical museum as does a prison in sai gon..[very similar] however they are mostly a memorial to the vietnamese political prisoners under the french... we are too quick to forget how the french enslaved that country..which in fact was the bottom line reason for the american war as we supported the french...

Much of Hoa Lo Prison has been demolished - a massive hotel was built next to it. What remains of the prison is a museum and you can see examples of the cells, pictures of the prisoners (Vietnamese under the French and Americans under the Vietnamese) but I don't recall any cell being specifically identified as having held Mcsame or anyone in particular. Just as the americans today don't torture prisoners, so the Vietnamese also show that they didn't torture the Americans.

I first saw Hoa Lo about 10 years ago, before it was "cleaned up" and at that time it was the most desolate, heart-chilling place I have ever seen - and I was only on the outside. If you look at it today, the stones a light yellow - but if you look in the cracks and crevasses between them you can see the orignal dark, dreary dirty black that the exterior wall was in the past.

Definitely worth a visit.

L D is correct about Hoa Lo Prison. Most of the prison sits where the Hanoi Towers are currently. What’s left is a small cleaned up tourist attraction. It's seriously doubtful that the cell claimed to be John McCain's was actually his cell. Nevertheless, it is very much worth visiting and taking pictures inside it.

Here’s an interesting factoid about the Hanoi Towers and Hoa Lo Prison:

U.S. Ambassador Pete Peterson lived in the Hanoi Towers during his tenure as the first U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam since the Fall of Saigon. Like McCain, Pete Peterson was also a P.O.W. in Hoa Lo Prison. In other words, he literally lived at the same place where he was a P.O.W. for many years.

Peterson's choice of residence was intentional as a symbol of putting the past differences between the two countries behind us and looking toward the future. It is said that Mr. Peterson would pray every morning before leaving his residence at the Hanoi Towers that what happened to him would never happen to anyone else.

Yea, they have a tour that you could take. Even the tunnel that they used in the Vietnam War. It's pretty much open to the public at this moment. If they wont let you in, just hand them 20 bucks and you'll get in. Of course, they dont take US dollars so u have to exchange it for the money that they use. Well, good luck
