Most of the answers above are from well-meaning people who are guessing rather than knowing.
I have been living in Vietnam for the last 17 years and I HAVE gotten Malaria once. It is NOT a lot of fun, so you are correct to be worried.
Having said that, I contracted it while on a trip deep into the provinces, did not use repellent or a net. I gambled and lost.
If you are in Hanoi or HCMC, you are pretty safe from catching malaria. Actually, the disease you should be worrying about is Japanese encephalitis...which you can get inoculated against.
Contact Hanoi Family Clinic for more accurate information. Thats your best bet.

Don't worry you will be fine, according to the WHO all cities and coastal resorts in Vietnam are malaria free. If you are planning to go into the countryside or jungle then visit your doctor at home before you leave. |

Unless you plan to stay in countryside and stay in hut, I would not worry. You chance of catching Malaria in the city is extreme low. You are more likely to get hurt in traffic accident or catching stomach virus than malaria. |

Don,t Worried About Malaria any more. Just enjoy your time in Hanoi, Halong, Sapa, Hue, Hoian, Dalat, Nhatrang, Phanthiet and Condao Island, Phuquoc Island.
Have good time. |

It all depends on where you go in Vietnam... when I went back for the first time, I was okay while in Saigon, a couple mosquito bites here and there but not too bad. When I went to visit my grandma in the countryside, I was literally attacked by them, even the repellent didn't seem to help. Despite this, I did not get malaria.
What I suggest you do, is avoid exposing your legs and arms as much as possible ( I know it's hard in the vietnamese climate) and try to find a very good repellent. (I used Off! but perhaps there is a better one).
Oh, and I was there for a whole month so you should be okay, especially if you are going on a tour. You'll probably go to more touristy places and I think the chances of malaria is greater the under-developed areas. |

Hi,I am am an american who lives in Vietnam and have for years. The chance of getting Malaria is small to none. the mosquitos are spayed and kept under control. I have lived in vietnam off and on for the past 40 years and saw many people get it but that was in my army days in the late 60's and early 70's. Lots of tourist now so all should be fine. Take care and enjoy your trip and a great country, there are always lots of brits there and some are my friends working there.... God Bless you and keep you safe while traveling, JDO |

The chances are pretty slim that you would get Malaria in Vietnam especially in the Cities or Beach resorts . Some smaller country villages the risk would increase especially towards the Laos border . There are mosquitos but if you use a good repellant with Deet in the compound , and cover up on an evening especially your legs and ankles you will have no problem . |

im 13
im vietnamese
i have gone from city to countryside
been to vietnam 6 times already i think if not then 5
and about malaria, well if you at least stay netted when you sleep and dont go out in the countryside too much i think it will be fine
ive been like everywhere from riding a buffalo to riding a freaking cab, and im alive
so yea dont go out in less populated areas thats it, also unless your going with some tour group you wont be seeing and tropical things, very less most likely
where are you going? and if i should suggest an island to go to Phu Quoc? iiiits BEAUTIFUL
have fun:]
and to felicia, you shoulnt stay ABSOLUTELY COVERED because then it would get waay too hot. first timers should bring mosquito block like you said and wear hats and stuff. always bring backpack with more block and water
when you go to bed cover every quare inch of your body with block, but no matter what you well get bitten a little, ive had a ton |

Hey,
Chances you will get malaria is rare due to their warm climate
besides if your on a tour you be around cities a lot an their none found their. My cousin recently travel their for the 1st time and freaked out to and she came back ALL happy☻☻☻ and LOVES it.
For precaution you can just use mosquito repellent and you be absolute covered lol
Hopes it helps =) |

I don't think that chances of getting malaria are high in Vietnam. I am Vietnamese and I'm going to Vietnam is summer too! If you go into the city, there aren't a lot of mosquitoes, I'm pretty sure. Malaria in mosquitoes are usually found in Africa.
My grandparents and other family members have lived in Vietnam for all their life and they never gotten Malaria before.
But if you are a little bit paranoid, just wear some mosquito repellent. It's never bad to be a little bit more careful.
Hope this helped you! And have fun in Vietnam! (You definitely will) |

Nah you will be fine (As everyone else has said). I have been to vietnam twice in the last two years and it is fine. There is almost no chance of getting Malaria if any so just enjoy your holiday. It is the best country I have ever been to ( Especially Hanoi And The Island Resort Of Vinpearl Land in Nha Trang )
So just have fun =) |
