Traveler
good luck on that one, You are going to have to pay your dues. Spend a lot of time in Vietnam and get friendly with many locals. Maybe at that time you will be able to find a reliable partner. The 51% doesn't have much to do with anything. Remember, things are changing fast here. within the next 5 years, you might not need a partner at all.

If this is the only place you have to ask this question, you're not smart enough to start a business... Especially in Viet Nam!

Just send me your money so you don't give it away to a "total" stranger.

Please define a "true" Vietnamese...

Are you asking about someone who is a legal Vietnamese citizen or someone who is honest? (Yes, there are honest Vietnamese...quite a few in fact)

Traveller is correct, but you do not have to wait 5 years. You can be 100% owner of a business in Vietnam NOW. Thats right...

There are many companies which started as a JV (joint venture) with a local partner and the foreign side finally couldn't take anymore of the shenanigans and bought out the local partner.

It costs MORE to operate as "100% foreign-owned" business, and chances are you will have major problems with tax, police and other documentation unless you have a good Vietnamese lawyer.

My advice, if you trust and love your wife, and she's a Vietnamese citizen, then put the company in HER name and give yourself the title of "consultant". This way you can get a visa, but the company will pay Vietnamese rates for just about everything.

If you worry about your wife stealing the company from you, understand that under the divorce law in Vietnam, she's gonna get 50% of everything you own anyway... so be good to her.

All the best,

If you were starting a business, why would you even need to know someones origin as long as they could speak the language and worked well?
