well back in the 60's, north was considered bad and south was considered good. not everyone that was living in the north at that time was bad. only the people that followed the viet congs were bad because they killed their own people. if your family did not support the viet congs, then no, you are not communist. today, both the south and the north are prospering greatly and are popular tourist attractions. the country is slowly rebuilding and is a beautiful country. |

Depends on your point of view.
The North was the Communist half. The South was democratic, and supported by the US.
Good and bad? Both had good and bad points. The north was very ideological, and allowed few freedoms. The south was quite corrupt.
The North won the war, and they say history is written by the victors, so, maybe in time the North will be considered good part. For the US though, it is the South that was good. |

Your question should be more specific: Good or bad about what? I myself never compare the north to the south. Each has its own individual characteristics in the common Vietnamese characteristics and culture, both have beautiful places to visit, and both have nice people. |

im not sure if your referring to traveling in Vietnam, but I have heard that Northern Vietnam is much better for traveling in then Southern Vietnam. |

where or we're?
Some people say the people from the northern part of the country are more industrious, some say they will cheat you, some say the people from the southern part are lazy, friendlier. (I never noticed any of this.)
I have met people from the northern borders areas down through Hanoi and as far south as Phan Rang (actually as far as Phu Quoc but I actually spent time in Phan Rang) - and I found the people I met to be pleasant, and I have developed some long-term friendships that I really value.
The most obvious differences I have noticed are differences in pronunciation, and some differences in food. The whole country is now under a nominally communist government, so as far as preferences go - it depends on climate, and if you have family ties (I guess). |

I prefer the South, just my opinion. The North is very narrow, but the population is very much. So the price of house is very expensive. Beside, Ho Chi Minh city ( a largest city in the South ) is the largest industrial estate, although it 's not the capital. |

That entirely depends on your current state of mind. To put it in a worn cliche "which side of the street are you on?"
The North Vietnamese were fighting to unite with the South. The only difference was the Socio/Poliical ideology. The North wanted to follow the Communist idea of governance. Before you think Communism = bad, know this: On paper everyone is equal and is without need. But in real life it doesn't take into account of basic human emotion i.e. greed, jealousy, fear, control. Which is why it rarely works for diverse groups because only one gets to decide for everyone else. If things had gone in there favor then there is a good chance the controlling party would have turned out a lot like China. North Korea started on some religious cult ideology with Kim Jong Il which was against the Communist doctrine.
The South were recovering from French Colonial Cristian occupation (I have to put this in here because one of the main reasons for occupying foreign lands was the zealous conversion everyone, this was not nearly as intense as in the Spanish Colonies) and adopted the western idea of a pseudo democratic republic that meant to keep the royal family somewhat in power. This is sort of what Taiwan and most of the Asian countries have.
I'm pretty sure that a little research in a public library will clear things up if you can get you descendants to provide a time and location for the family history.

I assume you're referring to the Vietnam conflict that the US was involved in. The US aided South Vietnam against the North Vietnamese Army and the Viet Cong. |
