They are both independant countries. Vietnam is Communist, and Cambodia is a democracy with a royal family.

You need Geography lessons! Cambodia is not part of Vietnam. Wasn't it know as Laos at one point? Maybe I need Geography lessons too!

Along with Laos they were both French colonies until the early 60s after a long offensive between the communits Vietcong and the French forces the French withdrew from this part of Indo-China. The Americans fearing what they called the Domino Theory - that if Vietnam goes communist then the whole of the region would follow suit including the former British colonies of Malay and Singapore (seems their intelegence was just as bad then as now) intervened to protect Southern Vietnam from the Red Devils.
When the World's Mightiest Power was defeated it dropped its bombs and agent orange on Cambodia and Laos to 'protect' them I suppose.
For a while Vietnamese soldiers occupied Cambodia but were forced to withdraw.
It is arguable that the French, American and Vietnamese intervention in Cambodia provoked the rise of the Khumer Rouge under Pol Pot.
Cambodia may have the trappings of a democracy but how democratic is buying votes with money or intimidation? Corruption is rife holding the country back.
As for Vietnam it is moving further from its communist ideals every month welcoming forgeign investments and businesses and its economy is racing ahead, but perhaps not to the benefit of very many millions of its inhabitants.
So Cambodia (in English or Kampuchea in French) is distinctly different from Vietnam.

Cambodia and Vietnam are BOTH countries in their own right, my friend!

For a short time, though, Cambodia was known, by a DIFFERENT name, - it was called "KAMPUCHEA"

Whether it is, STILL, sometimes called this, by locals, is not something, that I am aware of,at this point in time!

Cambodia is not part of vietnam. It is less than 2 KM away from the Cuu Chi tunnels (used in vietnam war)

Thailand and Cambodia separate counties for citizens they have their National I.D. with them.However if you are for a short a falang (Foreigners) can buy a visa for all three countries at each border crossing if you intend to cross borders make sure your Passport is Multiple entry. Or you have buy them again at a price. I speak for Thailand you must buy your permit to return before you go.For a long trip it is a visit to their embassy ..

No, Cambodia is its own country, totally different from Vietnam. Cambodia is west of Vietnam, below Thailand and Laos. Our culture is very different from Vietnam's too. Hope this helps...
