OMG, Nguyen is the number one most common surname in Vietnam XD
I mean, I know tons of people with the surname Nguyen, and they're not even related to each other... It's kind of funny if you think about it :P

Some other typical surnames are:
Le (haha, tons of other people has that surname. It means pear on vietnamese :P)
Tran (A VERY common surname)
Pham is also a very common name
Phan is common too
And so is Do.

But the top 3 are:
Nguyen
Tran
Le ^^

Yes, Nguyễn (阮) is a VERY common surname in Vietnam, but it doesn't mean all of Nguyễns are from the same family. Most of their ancestors owned different surnames but they changed to Nguyễn for hope of prosperity and safety under the last Dynasty of Vietnam (the Nguyễn Dynasty).

According to some researches, 40% of Vietnamese in Vietnam have Nguyá»…n as their surname. This surname is also common among overseas Vietnamese. In Australia, it is ranked 7th among most popular non-English family names. In the US, it is the 57th most common surname and in Czech Republic, it is the most common foreign surname.

Other common Vietnamese surnames include Trần (11%), Lê (9%), Phạm (7,1%), Hoàng/Huỳnh (5,1%), Phan (4,5%), VÅ©/Võ (3,9%), Äặng (2,1%), Bùi (2%), Äá»— (1,4%), Hồ (1,3%), Ngô (1,3%), Dương (1%), Lý (0,5%) etc...

You can see a list of Vietnamese surnames in the link below :

TRAN

Yeah absolutely!
I guess about 3 out of 10 Vietnamese have Nguyá»…n for their last name.
Not like American last names, there are only about 160 last names in Vietnam. And the most common (besides Nguyá»…n) are:
Trần
Lê
Lý
Phạm
Phan
Äặng
Äoàn
Äinh
Äá»— (mine :)
VÅ©
Võ
Ngô
Trương
Trịnh
Dương
Hoàng
Hồ

Isabelle....
