I'm Vietnamese and I lived in Vietnam until I was 11 (1994) and has gone back there recently. Vietnamese is the main language spoken there. People who know English or have studied English are on the rise but many only speak Vietnamese. For my whole life (the time I lived there and the time I visit recently) I've never seen or heard French being spoken once. So on the topic of French being spoken "regularly" in Vietnam? My answer is NO. ^_~

no.. quite a number of old timers can [ and enjoy speaking french given the opportunity. its quite common for students to study french.. and many viets go to france to study but outside of that french is almost never spoken in viet nam

No, it's not.
Vietnamese is the official language here, and most of us speak it as our native language. French is the second most popular foreign language in Vietnam (with English being the first), and no one speaks French on a daily basis.

I never heard it all except from my French mate when our Rugby team were beating there's , i think he was swearing at me . The second and widely spoken language is English .

I have lived in HCM for 9 years and have never seen people speak French. The french colonization period was started in the 1850s and lasted until 1954 (Dien Bien Phu). During that period of time, French officials held higher post and the economy was usually controlled by Chinese , especially the south. Before the French colonization, the Vietnamese would speak Vietnames and write in Han Chinese, like Cantonese, TieChao, Fujian people in China today. During the colonization Romanized characters was introduced to the Vietnamese and thus Han Chinese was abandoned as a method of writing.

Other than English, you have Cambodian, Chinese, some French from very old people as languages spoken there. I think Chinese is spoken with the highest number after Vietnamese. There were 1.5 million Chinese before the unification, and now probably number 1 million or so. The Chinese left Vietnam due to discrimination by the native Vietnamese.

Since the French and English don't live there and only go there as travelers, we can say that the Chinese who live in Vietnam and speak Chinese on a daily basis will overwhelm all other languages spoken besides Vietnamese.
