Is it cheap to live in Vietnam?

Basically my partner and I are in Aus for a year but would like to go over to Vietnam for a month to live. the flights are gonna be about 2800 bucks return to Sydney which is quite a lot, but will the living costs make up for that? Staying in Aus per night is about $52 for the both of us etc and everything is expensive. What is Vietnam like, price-wise?

This is a really really good site.
its really long tho, so i dont think copy and pasting is a good idea.

here:
http://travelhappy.info/vietnam/how-much-money-do-i-need-in-vietnam/

umm, i think it says that you probably will use 30 dollars everyday.
including food and all.

im vietnamese and our family go there all the time...
which is costly but, oh well.
as in plane cost.

"in Hanoi and Saigon, you're more likely to pay 10 USD per night for a decent room, but then there are also dorm rooms available in those cities for as little as 2 USD per night, which isn't the case elsewhere. If you are a budgeteer, plan on spending at least 8 USD a night on average, mid-rangers should budget 20 to 30 USD per night, and luxury travellers are looking at rooms 50 USD and up. Swimming pools are not as standard as they are in Thailand, so only expect to see one in the mid- to luxury-range, and then mostly in the south."

well, i heard that it is cheap to live in vietnam. the things over there are cheaper than over here in the US.

Hanoi_babe
You can find cheap hotels (US$15-20) in the 2-3 star level, but clean and nice, nothing fancy though.
Food is cheap if you stay with Vietnamese food and not going to Italian Places etc. as all these things are imported.
Seafood, Noodle soup very cheap, local beer as well.
If you´re smoker - cigarettes are cheap!!!
Wine is quiet expensive - except for Dalat wine, but..brrrrrrrrrr.
Taxi, train, motorbike taxi is cheap - so, go ahead!

My tip for nice cheap dream beach "real Vietnam feeling" - Mango Bay resort on Phu Quoc island!

:D I've been to Vietnam before, and its not that cheap...

The food cost little over there, but to get around anywhere cost alot.

._> you travel by motorcycles. Its tough to walk too.

Vietnam is very expensive.

I 'did' Vietnam at the start of my travels and compared to the US and Oz it is so much cheaper - When you take your currency your getting more for your money. Food is cheap and depending on your budget you can get accommodation for about £5 a night. organize your own trips instead of going with travel agents and haggle on prices for clothes and taxi bikes etc and your be fine.

well for a month, you can survive with about $1000 USD if you are going to live in a hotel, eat really fancy, and shop a lot.
if you are going to live like real viet people, then you can probably survive with $500 USD. it's not that expensive to live in VN.

$1 USD = $17,000 VND
$100 USD = $1.5 million VND

In Vietnam you can live for really cheap or really expensive- it depends on your habits, desires, needs. It will definitely be far cheaper than Australia. My entire fixed expenses are only around $400 (US) a month, but I live in a very primitive house and rarely eat out and I don't drink beer.

A hotel in the backpacker ghetto may cost you $15 a night, but it won't be fancy and there's no kitchen. A Western meal may cost you $5 per person or more, while a local meal might cost $1.50. It all depends on what you are comfortable with and enjoy. Taxis are not cheap; I rent a motorbike for $60 a month.

Yes.....and no. The prices ARE rising there. BUT it is still cheaper than America. (I lived and was born there, but I'm not illegal.) Most people ride motorcycles, but some do drive cars, ride in taxis, and all that. You may find Saigon City strange - they do not stop at stoplights, and the traffic is crazy. You do not have to put on seat belts (it is optional.) However, I suggest you do not live there, if you care much for animals, er, there is MUCH roadkill. I have seen a dead puppy! O_O But - all in all, that is my SUGGESTION. If you will, you should vacation there before you go to live there, so you will see how you like it there. A tip, too; you might want to learn Vietnamese before you go! ;D

If you have loved ones there that are willing to let you stay and they cook for you, it's decent. Prices for room and board and taxi to get around will drive you nuts. When you exchange foreign currency, you spent it more than you are likely in your home town.
