I just spent 4 1/2 short years in VN. It is one of the safest places I have been, and I have been to over 40 countries. The people are great, good food, but the weather can be rather unpleasant, as in hot and humid, or cold and humid, or anything and humid.

While there is a war memorial that trashes the Americans, the truth is that Americans are so welcome here. American business fuels the heating-up Vietnam economy. Americans go around and are seen in awe by some locals. Locals are very friendly to whites, including Americans.

yes, Vietnam is very safe for Americans to travel to and they're not embarrased to talk about the war,.. because they won it.
You will be treated with respect as long as you treat them with respect.
Vietnam is quite a conservative family orientated country so don't go ther looking for a concubine. If you have a good heart and a good attitude you will be treated like a movie star.In my experience Vietnamese people are very honest open and genuine. be kind and genorous without flashing your money around.
If you are seeking a truly new, sensory and cultural experience then book your flight now. If you are a fledgling sex tourist then stay at home. I am sure you are not the latter but you must undersand that this reply will be read by many.
I hope you take the chance, visit the vietkong tunnels, shoot an ak 47, take a boat trip along the mekong etc etc. There are so many amazing things to do in Vietnam. If you meet your true love there then fair play.Love works in mysterious ways.Expect nothing. Embrace what is now.

yes, they're very friendly to whites so Americans are very welcome - not all of them but I know there are some very pretty women in Vietnam. The thing is tourist gets a lot of attention when they're outside, and many people (mostly from the countryside) are still very poor so they might just charge more for foreigners, I don't think they kidnap Americans but I do see a lot of pick pockets. I have an old American teacher, who was in the war and now he lives here for a few years already I can tell he likes it here, he was an American soldier & now his closest friends are old Vietnamese soldiers, so I think where you're from doesn't matter too much. Like many other developing countries Vietnam is too crowded and still poor, there is cholera and other diseases here but if u stay away from the food on the sidewalk and can afford to buy things from a proper supermarket u'll be fine.

i was just there 2 weeks ago but I'm Canadian but my cousin is American and we went together nothing happened to us everyone there is so friendly and no they do NOT pickpocket you don't listen to that person above ... (LIAR)

Don't go, and it's not safe. I've read news that HIV/AIDS are rampant in Vietnam. If you choose to marry a local girl, you better get her tested.
