Is your visa expiring one day before you leave (Hanoi) a serious problem? |
My parents are coming over to visit me in Ha Noi this Christmas and are flying back home in January. The only problem is, they have just realized that their visas expire a day before they are due to go.
It seems a waste of money to get an extension on their visa; considering they would have to then buy a three-month visa, instead of a one-month visa. On the other hand, I don't want them having loads of hassle at the airport. So, what should they do?
I was wondering what the (real) consequences of this are likely to be - Should they expect a small fine, or would it really be better for them to change their booking and fly home earlier. Of course, if you have any more ideas, please let me know.
Cheers,
Adam |

The best option is to have your parents get an extension of their visa. Almost any travel agent can do it cheaply and quickly.
Your parents could try to just go out and say "oops, sorry" and the Immigration officer CAN impose a fine of something like $10 per day if he wants (read: tea money), but he can also be a pain in the *** if he wants. Just remind them to be pleasant, contrite and polite. That goes a LONG way here.
You might want to check with Immigration when coming into the country to see if they can advise you. They can be quite helpful at times.
Last alternative is for your parents to leave a day earlier and enjoy some time in Bangkok... |

A visa is permission to stay IN a country. It’s not supposed to keep a person from leaving a country. Technically, the Vietnamese immigration officers are supposed to escort your parents OUT of the country if their visa is expired, but they’re not going to do that without some kick back. Trust me on this - The payoff to the customs officials will be much more than just getting an extension when they arrive.
Upon arrival, your parents should ask the immigration official to extend their visa to cover their departure date. If they won’t, then getting a visa extension through a reputable travel agency is cheap and relatively painless. The $10 you spend getting this done shortly after they arrive is a lot less of a headache than guessing what the customs officials will do when your parents are leaving. |

In the scheme of things the additional cost of a visa that covers the period of stay for your parents is a small price to pay for peace of mind. Refusal of entry, a fine or even a period detained at the airport are just not worth it. The cost of changing a flight will no doubt be more than stumping up for the correct visa in the first place.
I suggest they consult with the Vietnamese consulate before travel as to how they can amend the existing visa or acquire a new visa. Don't even think of trying it on and pleading ignorance at arrival or departure. if visa rules are flouted they may refused a Visa in future and means they would not be able to visit you again |

My nephews visa had expired when he went to leave Hanoi airport, he was escorted out of the airport by the police and told to get it re-newed . I ended up having to buy him a new ticket to the UK, a hotel in Hanoi while is visa was extended, i live in Nha Trang and it was a nightmare. |

The whole point of a visa is to give you the right to be in a country.
So if your visa expires, you are illegally in the country in question.
I wouldn't play around with that in a country like Vietnam. |

If their visa expires before they are to go back home Vietnamese officials can refuse to let them into Vietnam in the first place. |
