My wife and I have visited Vung Tau, Long Hai, Nha Trang, Hoi An and Da Nang over the past couple weeks. We've also visited Beaches in Northern Vietnam during past trips.
Personally, I think Nha Trang is the best all around. There is so much to do there and at reasonable prices (for now). We stayed at a two star hotel across the street from the beach for $18/night. We had lobster for breakfast that cost $15 including beer.
If you're in HCMC and don't want to travel too far, then Vung Tau or Long Hai is where you want to go. Vung Tau is exciting if you don't mind a more native Vietnamese setting. Lots of food to eat, lots of things to do and only an hour away from HCMC by water taxi. Long Hai has several excellent resorts as well as the military officer's retreat. Long Hai is less crowded and where you want to go if you want to avoid crowds.
The central coast is the place to go for surf. Hoi An, Dan Nang, Vien and other cities is where you will find miles and miles of surf. If you are able to get a surfboard there you will be the only surfer for miles. Hoi An is a tourist trap but still reasonably priced, while Da Nang is more reasonable. Da Nang or China Beach areas are not well developed yet, and gets pretty boring once the sun goes down. You want to be in town before dark. The best sand is at Da Nang or China Beach. It is silky smooth and soft thanks to the surf.
While Hoi An and Da Nang are geared up for tourists and fun,Vien and points North of the former DMZ are stuck in a communist Twilight Zone time warp from 20 years ago. Vien is probably the cheapest place for decent beach accommodations in Vietnam. You can get a balcony room at a beach side hotel for less than $10/night if you don't mind Soviet era accommodations and a picture of Ho Chi Minh in your bedroom staring at you all night long.
Have fun! |

Just came back from Nha Trang, please do not go there at this time cause too much raining all day long. Sometime in Jan-Apr period would be good cause weather would be sunny. However, night life in Nha Trang is boring. Vung Tau night life would be much better with more pubs and restaurant. Phan Thiet is another option ( Mui Ne beach ). Very much developed now compared to few years back, though much still need to be done. It still has its' natural beach atmosphere ie not too much of modern development infrastructure which can be very peaceful if that's what you are looking for. Anyway, do enjoy yourself and surf wild.... |

Nhatrang is the best choise, but don't come there from Oct to end of Dec. From Jan, the weather is damn nice. Nhatrang has many activities even scuba diving, mud bath, places to visit. |
