American POWs during the Vietnam War:
771 Americans were captured and interned
113 died in captivity
658 were returned
142,255 Americans captured and interned during major wars in the 20th century. The Vietnam War accounts for only 0.5% of American POWs during the 20th century, but also accounts for the longest time an American POW has been imprisoned (Captain Floyd James Thompson, captured March 1964, released March 1973). |
