Please help me plan a 7-8 day itinerary for a trip to Vietnam. ?

I am from San Francisco. I am planning my second trip to Vietnam and already booked the plane ticket to Ho Chi Minh City for October. I went last summer, but only stayed in Ho Chi Minh City for a week, so I would like to explore Vietnam more and get out of Ho Chi Minh City immediately, since I did everything you could there.

I am trying to come up with a 7-8 day itinerary. I am arriving from San Francisco to Ho Chi Minh City on October 3rd in the morning. My flight back is on Sunday, October 12th.

I want to go to Hanoi, but don't know if I should start that first. I would have to arrange a flight to Hanoi from Saigon since I am on such a tight schedule. I was going to ask you how I can arrange that flight, once I land in Ho Chi Minh City. I also want to explore Danang, but am not sure of the weather around that time of the year.

Here is the itinerary that I planned out so far:

Day 1 (October 4, Saturday): Arrive in Saigon at 10:20am. Fly and depart to Hanoi via Vietnam Airlines. Arrive in Hanoi at Noi Bai Airport. Transfer to Hanoi. Check in at Church Hotel. See Old Quarter, arrange Halong Bay cruise, and go clubbing.

Day 2 (October 5, Sunday): Hang out in Hanoi. Visit Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, as well as One Pillar Pagoda. Walk around French Quarter. Also visit the Ethnology Museum, Literature Temple, and Quoc Tu Giam.

Day 3 (October 6, Monday): Halong Bay Cruise (Day One)

Day 4 (October 7, Tuesday): Halong Bay Cruise (Day Two), return to Hanoi.

Day 5 (October 8, Wednesday): Fly to Hue, see Citadel, visit King’s tombs by motorbike, eat street food, fly kites, stay at La Residence OR Fly to Nra Trang and stay at the beach.

Day 6 (October 9, Thursday): Hue or Nra Trang

Day 7 (October 10, Friday): Fly back to Saigon. Get a hotel for us to stay at.

Day 8 (October 11, Saturday): Free day/night. Last night before I leave.

Day 9 (October 12, Sunday): Depart back home at 12:55pm from Saigon.

One big thing that I notice with Central Vietnam is that October and November tend to be the rainy season, except Nha Trang, which is November and December. So I'm not sure what to do about that. I want to avoid the rain and not have it postpone any activities I have planned.

I would greatly, greatly appreciate any feedback to help me better plan this trip out!!!!!!

I like the sound of your trip very much. we are thinking of going in April next year perhaps for a few days longer. we will fly from Hong Kong to Vietnam and then back home to Melbourne via Bali. The Church hotel has been recommended to us by another friend. can you help with nice beach locations? we like to stay at nice places but not super deluxe. I look forward to your advice.

cheers

I am not 100% certain you could buy a ticket on your arrival. Vietnam airlines have an office there and there are many flights to Hanoi. Have you coincided going to a Travel shop in SF, they should be able to book your internal flights and at least you would have peace of mind. Where ever you decide NT or Danang, a day or two before you leave go into a travel shop, tell them you need a 1 night stay in Saigon at the price you require and a taxi to it on your arrival, very easy for them to arrange, you will be met and you wont be ripped off, as you are not having to waste alot of time looking for a hotel in Saigon you can catch the 1815 from Nha Trang allowing you a full day by the beach. Do not fly with Pacific in VN, they are rubbish.
