Questions about Vietnam? |
They say Nguyen Tan Dung is the current leader of Vietnam.
They also say Vietnam is a communist state, but my dad said that they vote for their leaders in Vietnam. I don't really think Nguyen Tan Dung is a dictator. |

Traveller - you beat me to it! LOL
Nguyen Tan Dung is probably one of the most highly qualified Prime Minister's that Vietnam has ever had. He is highly PRO business and the nation's economy has skyrocketed under his administration.
I have played golf with him a few times before he became Prime Minister and can attest he has a good head on his shoulders.
Yes, Vietnam is officially communist, no big surprise there. But its actually more of a benevolent socialism more than anything else.
Getting rich over here is encouraged and the government makes it as easy as possible for you to do it. They WANT you to succeed!
What most Westerners don't understand is that we DO have elections here. In the OLD days, all candidates MUST be a member of the "Party", but NOT ANYMORE.
In fact, during the last election, the government was discouraged by how FEW "non-Party" members were elected. Vietnam knows that it needs some diversity, but the Party will ALWAYS be the major driving force until the Vietnamese people themselves decide otherwise (and right now, they're not interested in change...they're too busy making money!)
Nguyen Tan Dung is NOT a dictator...far from it.
Unfortunately, too many people hear the word "communist" and think cold war, Stalin, Lenin Mao...
It isn't like that here in Vietnam, believe me because if it was, I would have gone back to America a long time ago! |

In the US there are two official parties, and they put forth their candidates for election. Other "3rd party" candidates can also get onto ballots, if they meet the necessary requirements - not an easy task. And of course write-in candidates are possible. But the repubs and dems do their best to ensure that there are no viable 3rd party possibilities, and have rigged the system to perpetuate their control.
Under the Vietnamese system the communist party is the only political party permitted. And, as I understand it, only approved candidates can appear on the ballot - so they have more barriers before someone can get onto a ballot, and they do not permit non-approved candidates to run. It is a one-party state. You could say it is a communist dictatorship, but since Dung serves at the pleasure of the party, it might be a stretch to say HE is the dictator.
You would be well advised to do some real research on this question, if you are really interested. What folks say on yahoo answers, folks like me and others, should be checked against more authoritative sources.

Having posted the above before seeing the other posts, I will stand by what I said, and defer to Nguyen and Izzy on details - but you should still do a bit of independent research. |

It's true that Nguyen Tan Dung is not a dictator. He's really good at what he's doing. He also listens to the ideas from the specialists, the business owners ... In Vietnam, the people don't vote for the president or the primary minister directly but vote for the delegates, the delegates will then vote for the higher delegates ... and finally those voted delegates will vote for the president or the primary minister. So if your dad said that "they vote for their leaders in Vietnam", you can understand like that. But actually, the voting system in Vietnam could be better, there are still some issues with that which would be improved later on.
To say "Nguyen Tan Dung is the current leader of Vietnam" is not really correct. He's the primary minister but in a communism system, the final decision are ussually unanimous. The people in the goverment (in Vietnam) can also discuss and change the powers of the prime minister if he did something wrong (again by unanimous). But it's true that in Vietnam, the prime minister is the most powerful person in the goverment.
Additionally, Nguyen Tan Dung's children are very smart and did many good jobs. His daughter is current the CEO of an investment firm with huge investment contracts.
Anyway, I don't really care about politics. As long as I can live well and do whatever I want, as long as the economy in Vietnam is still developing positively and many other benefits can be seen, I'm happy with whoever the leader is. |
